What type of spirit? You should be a little more specific, some consider elementals spirits, or ghosts or even demons or angels, or are you trying to contact a loved one. Spirits are every where. Most would tell you to leave this subject alone, some would suggest that you ask Alester Crowly,

Me, I say focus on your desire, build up your energy usually through lustful thoughts or hate, but I suppose Love could work, use your imagination to create the spirit in your mind and focus all your will in your endevours don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time, just keep trying. If Dogma helps use it but it isn't nessacary.

People who play with fire get burn. I hope when you summoned a spirit or spirits, you can handle what you wish for. You are threading on dangerous grounds and hope you can unnnnn....summoned it or them. Only fools rush in where wise men fear to trod... Well, for your information, you cannot summoned a good spirit. There is one Spirit and that is the Holy Spirit. God has ministering angels to assist and help us. You have one assigned to you - use him.

Don't.

You have no idea what you might be inviting in.

Check out books like The Demonologist, by Ed and Lorraine Warren or Beware the Night by Officer Ralph Sarchie.

Both contain stories of people who were fooled by what seemed to be an innocent "lost soul" but were infact something else.

Why would you want to? And if you were able to summon a spirit what would you attempt to do with it...because you do know that they can not be controlled or reasoned with don't you? It would be more likely that you'd summon some demon into your household that will reek utter destruction on your life before its done!

You say " if there is a spirit present, knock once for yes and twice for no" . But you must be aware that 2 knocks could mean yes yes. Confusing isn't it?

You don't.
Spirit summoning is pure superstition - and coming from a Shintoist, that's saying quite a bit.

Go to the gate of the underworld, dig a trench, sacrifice a goat and spill its blood into the trench.

Say, "Here, spirit spirit..." A whistle and a cookie helps.

Go to the liquor store.

Tell the clerk you want a fifth of knotty head (gin).

Drink some.

Too easy.

Yes, I know how but I won't tell you how to do it. Its dangerous because you don't know who, or what, you've summoned.
