I know its prob a dumb question but I have always given my daughter vitamins and I don't really know why we do that. What do they help with? I have always heard they are good for them and that is why I do it. I never looked any further than that.. I just did it!

Well, this is definately one of those things that is better to do, even if you don't know why. :-)

Different vitamins and minerals are good for different reasons. They can boost your immune system. They're important for healthy bones, teeth, eyes, skin, hair, blood levels. They help with memory and brain function.

Vitamin supplements are important, especially in children, because the vast majority of us don't get all the vitamins and minerals everyday that we should. Most children don't eat many vegetables or other natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Having their Flintstones every day makes sure they get the vitamins, even if they're picky and won't eat the foods that are full of them.

We are fortunate to live in a country where most children don't go to bed hungry. Quite the opposite, they develop very selective diets, often lacking in some nutrients. The purpose of children's vitamins is to fill in the gaps, so to speak. A balanced diet, however, is the better option. Vitamins are no substitute for protein.

I recently asked my child's pediatrician about this. My son just turned one, and I asked if he should be taking any vitamins. She told me that she wouldn't worry about it as long as he was healthy, ate right, and wasn't laying around all day (what one year old is?!). So, my son doesn't even take children's vitamins, and probably won't for a while. He does see his doctors regularly, though.

They are very good for making huge profits for the drugs companies.

As far as children are concerned, nothing beats a decent diet.
