Here is a tip:
Don't pay to enter anyone's contest. There are plenty of legitimate contests where you do not have to pay.

Don't buy the ridiculously priced "American Library of Photography Book." I almost guarantee if you send a photo to them it will be accepted as a "winner" and published. Piece of junk.

Lots of times area newspapers run photography contests. All the major consumer photo mags have on-going contests. (Pop Photo, Outdoor Photographer, etc) Lots of on-line sites too, www.betterphoto.com comes right to mind.

Have fun entering and don't get discouraged if you don't win.
Good luck!

You can try doing a google search for photo contests. You can also check the websites of photography magazines and organizations.
(If you add a tab to your google homepage and choose photography - let it choose your gadgets - you'll get a ton of links to photo related websites, you can then look around for contests.)
A lot of contests have specific topics or rules that need to be followed, so you may not be able to just enter any picture you happened to have laying around. (you might need to be able to prove that you took them, or they may need to be a certain format or of a particular topic)

Another route you might try is a county fair (if you live in an area that has one) The prizes may not be real big but you might get a ribbon and some local notoriety (and you can always brag about it)

One last idea is to go to your local camera shop (not places like Best Buy, but actual camera specialty shops - Cord Camera is a good example) As the employees they may know of local competitions or even nationwide ones sponsored by their vendors or affiliates.

Good Luck!

Start with the ones you like best. Show them to several people and they will help you narrow them down to a handful of pictures. Then if you can, post some online for critical analysis from people who answer questions here. There are several with a good eye who can give you constructive criticism.
