My first few initial questions, to understand the views of many atheists, were pretty revealing. So I figured I would throw out another thesis, and a question to counter it...
(While I understand that this may not be ALL atheists' viewpoints, I am only trying to understand the generally accepted view of most atheists)
From what I have perceived now -- Atheists believe that it is a fact that their is absolutely no Empirical Evidence, thus far in this world, that any God(s) exist. And, that it is not logical to believe in something for which there is no evidence.
In other words, an atheist will claim that God(s) don't exist because there is no scientifically tested Proof.
That being said, I want to pose this question:: What about Love?
You can't scientifically test and show proof of Love, so do you disbelieve in Love as well?

As I am sure most of the ansers to that question will be, "Of course we believe in Love!", I must say this...
We believe in Love, not because it has been tested and proven, but because of the non-physical effect that it has on us in our every day lives! This is the same effect that many believers will tell you that God has on our lives, because God IS Love!
Any and all thoughts/opinions welcome! (Short, Long, etc...)

Reply to Soulful Criss:: As I said, God IS Love. Thus, when you fee Love, you are feeling God, you have just chosen not to accept that. I am not going to try and change your mind, but just point that out.

Reply to Godless:: As I said before, God is the epitome of emotion. Stop thinking of God as a "being" and more as an energy. Emotions are a form of energy within us, and I will claim that God is the source of that energy.

Reply to Dr. Strangelove:: Finally, someone who has tried to show a bit more "scientific proof." The question I have, to rebut your answer is...
While I agree that Love is a universal thing, and agreed upon, where does it come from? If it is only the Brain Chemistry, then why don't we ALL react to the same stimuli when it comes to Love?

You stated, "Love is a concept, an idea. Concepts can't exist in the same sense that a physical object does. Are you going to tell me that since I can imagine the concept of Odin that he exists?"
It seems to me like you think I am trying to claim that God is a physical object or being. This is not at all the truth.

Reply to haysus:: Your mind is so wrapped up in the disbelief in church doctrine to be able understand my view on God.
It's so funny how so many people claim tha "God" killed man, like God was/is this human being like us, that can physically kill. That is just a distorted vision of what God is (notice the key term there: "What") It was Man that did all the killing, at it was the distorted mind of that man that created the books of the Bible, which is why I don't look at the uselessness of the history within it.
You're right that all those emotions ARE feelings, and that they have been shown to be electrical impulses within the brain, but the question is where do those electrical impulses come from? What creates them? Where does that energy come from?
Oh, and in my opinion, True Unconditional Love is closest thing to the -feeling- of God than anything else. It is a all-encompassing love that I don't think MANY have, not atheist or theist alike. (I know I don't have it fully!)

First of all, I don't limit my beliefs in what has been absolutely scientifically proven. I just want some evidence, especially for extraordinary claims.
With regard to love, it's both logical and demonstrated. You can see evidence in brain chemistry, in heartbeat, in breathing, and personal anecdotes.
Also... unlike the issue of God, love is also universal -- it means the same thing in Japan that it does here. That suggests that it's a universal truth of the human condition, not a mythology specific to a region.

I never said I wanted scientific proof- just proof. If I could feel god I would believe. Since I can feel love I believe. And BTW you can't get a concensus of what's generally believed by atheists- we don't believe the same things- we are free thinking and therefore have many different views on everything. The only thing that groups us together is a lack of belief- would you say that everyone who doesn't believe in unicorns all have generally the same ideas on love?

"In other words, an atheist will claim that God(s) don't exist because there is no scientifically tested Proof."
-- Wrong. We claim only that there is no evidence. Lack of evidence does not mean nonexistence. God can be disproven with logiuc but that's a different story.
Love is a concept, an idea. Concepts can't exist in the same sense that a physical object does. Are you going to tell me that since I can imagine the concept of Odin that he exists?

Love has been scientifically proven. Love, like all human emotions, are bioelectrical/chemical signals sent to and from the brain. Being used to someone, admiring someone, needing someone's companionship..... those are all triggered by responses from the brain.
If you block those receptors that control such feelings you can block the person's ability to love.
Emotions can be and have been proven through scientific study. The proof of existence of your god is just a 2000+ year old book, and some "feelings" that you have due to chemical imbalances in your brain that make you susceptible to mental manipulation and the failure of common sense.

"You can't scientifically test and show proof of Love, so do you disbelieve in Love as well?"
False. You can scientifically test and show proof of love.
This question has been asked a number of times before, and invariably the believer who thought it was an effective challenge to atheists was unaware of the existence of an fairly extensive scientific literature about love. It's hard not to eventually conclude after this kind of thing happens over and over again that religious belief is largely the product of unawareness of the world around us.
==============
"We believe in Love, not because it has been tested and proven, but because of the non-physical effect that it has on us in our every day lives!"
Er, "non-physical"? Wrong again.
You really need to put a lot more thought into this - you're in WAY over your head with this stuff. You also confounded proof and evidence in your original question. They're not at all the same, and it makes an important difference.

This question came up yesterday.
No, you can't look across the room and literally see love there. As an emotion, it has no physical form. But there are physical embodiments to our emotions and when exposed to them it causes electrical and chemical responses in the brain. Those changes can be measured. That, to me, is proof of its existance. I have no proof of God's existance though.

Your mind is so wrapped up in god that you fail to see the implications of your question.
What makes you think that god is love? Or, for that matter, what has god got to do with love. That moron, according to your sacrate book, murdered millions of people, children, women, whatever. Does that sound like an all loving being to you?
Love is a state of mind, a feeling, like pain, jealously, hate, etc. Atheists can love freely and without having to answer to a mythical man in the sky. Whereas a religious person thinks god is love . So, in other words. An Atheists love is real and unconditional, whereas a Christians love is unknown because he/she believes that love can only exist with god.

"Love" is a word used to describe a strong emotional bond between two people. Just like anger, pain, remorse, etc. this emotions can be measured using instruments that show brain activity. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.
As far as "romantic" love goes, I'd say that's more a social concept that anything else.

The existence of human emotion is hardly the same thing as supernatural beings that predate the universe.
And yes, human emotions are understood by science, their existence in the human psyche is well documented and fairly predictable.

That is completely insane. Why would you need to believe in a god to believe in love? And why would love point to a gods existance? They have nothing to do with each other in any way. Love is an emotion. Emotions are caused by chemicals in your brain. That doesn't point to any god.
