First, yes - sorta - jumping rope for 20 minutes will give your heart about the same workout as running 2 miles, however running works out the leg muscles more, whereas jump rope works on the calves more. I think if you do the 20 minutes of jump rope and rotate that with the walking for 60 minutes you should be able to lose however much weight you want. Either way make sure you stay on a pretty healthy diet (veggies, fruits, and drinking lots of water) or you won't see as good of results as otherwise. I hope this helps you - good luck!

Jumping rope and running I don't believe is the same. Here are some of the differences: With running, your legs are in motion, like a stride. You can run in place w/ jumping rope, but your legs don't give that stretch/stride motion. Also, w/ running you can possibly run up grade or down grade.
Another thing, jumping rope always has your arms in a pretty good motion. It is true though that your heart gets a good work up with both exercises. I would do them interchangeably every other day. That way you'll give your muscles rest, and you won't get bored.

Cross-training is a great idea and will keep you mentally out of a rut of doing the same routine day upon day. Jumping rope can be paced out like a jog, but can be as intense as running a short sprint, with more upper-body work then simply sprinting - for example - 50 yards on a track.
As with running, though, you are going to have to build up endurance for jumping rope. So, start building through time and intensity.
Both activities will get you pointed onto the trail of fitness and health.

Jumping rope can be a very good exercise if done at a fast pace. Because you are also using your arms you might burn more calories than you would running but only if you do it fast

"JUMPING ROPE" is not the same as running. Both are good exercises, but they accomplish different things. Jumping rope for twenty minutes is extreme. If you're not already well-conditioned, don't try that.

I wouldn't think so...it would depend on how fast you're jump roping and how you're doing it (jumping with both legs or in a running-like technique).

Both are very good for calorie burning and cardiac health. The best exercise is one that you'll want to continue doing. You may become bored and tend to slack off if you stick with just one thing. You may find that alternating keeps you more motivated. See what works best for you and whatever you decide, stick with it!
