By their very nature, Rube Goldberg machines are complicated.

How many steps does your machine have to have?

Pick something ridiculously easy to do like opening a small door to let out a cat. Sure the cat could do it herself, but why make it easy? Do it the Rube Goldberg way.

The motion or weight of the cat as she approaches the door could tip a balance or trigger the release of something. That action will trigger something else and so on until finally a lever is pulled that opens the door.

Gravity is your friend. Rolling marbles, falling rocks, etc will add the motion and energy that your machine will require. You can also add some energy from wind-up mechanisms, rubber bands, mouse traps, or springs.

For some examples look here:

Think of the old game Mousetrap, that is a Rube Goldberg designed game (turn the crank to kick over the bucket to release the ball down the steps....). These can be real fun, so let your imagination run with it.
