I have recently started and won £1200.00 by placing one bet on a tennis match. However my friend who does not gamble has warned me that gambling is easy money come and easy money go !

Is he right?

Please advise.

People that think that gambling will bring a constant stream of money are simply ignorant. Yet, people who condemn gambling as evil and say that everyone who gambles will eventually go broke are also very ignorant. Confused?

Any proffesional gamble or mature gambler will tell you that you have to access every gambling oppertunity as either positive EV ( expected value) or negative EV. This is just an analysis of whether you will be a winner in the longrun. Gambling establishments such as casinos, sportsbooks, and lotteries make billions yearly by convincing people to take negative EV scenarios.

Blackjack: -5% EV
Roulette: -5% EV
Lottery: usually 12 million to one for a 6 digit lottery and with 50 million plus playing meaning almost no chance for a constant profit if theoretically played infinate times

As for sports betting, the bookies that set the odds and lines are statistical experts and always give a line that puts betters at a disadvantage. I am intrieged at how you won that much on one tennis match, but if it was an even money bet (no odds, just a straight bet) then the person that bet you must have been very stupid or the macth in question was handycapped as a coinflip ( 50-50 likelyhood of either player winning)

Overall, the vast majority of gamblers will end up lossing, and if they lack intelligence, patience, and logic, will lose far more than they theoretically should. You should probably listen to your friend adn simply gamble small money for personal enjoyment/fun, and not think about doing it for serious money untill you develop a more sophisticated perspective on gambling, especially the mathematics of gambling if you will be sports betting.

I would highly suggest reading "You Can Bet on It!", a book on sports betting from Cardonza Publishing that can begin your education as a "winning" gambler.

A couple of years ago the UK tax authorities recognised about 6 professional horse race gamblers in the country, and they each made only a few bets per year. Succeeding meant real research - hiring a helicopter between race tracks etc. The London casinos think there are about 100 good card counters in the country. They are all banned anyway, and could earn better money doing less boring jobs.

Gambling is alot of fun, you just have to be very careful. You should only gamble with money that you can afford to lose. Don't gamble with money that you need for rent or food. There are many forms of gambling the most exciting for me is when I go to the casino, they have many different games that you can play. Just consider gambling as entertainment. Enjoy and have fun. GOOD LUCK
