I usually do, because it's just easier to reach when you're standing more in front than when you're still further back. But it's a very minor thing, and usually we all have plenty of time to twiddle our thumbs while groceries are checked and payments are made... I don't think it's rude when someone doesn't put the bar down or anything.
One thing I think is rude is when people put very heavy stuff really close to my breakables! I always put the heavy stuff first, the breakables at the end... if I got a liter bottle of coke I don't put it really close to someone else's cookies or chips (or my own) 'cause sometimes if the belt is a bit jerky starting up it could topple over, I either keep some space or lay it down or both... also at the end of the belt stuff gets pushed together a bit and heavy stuff will crush very light bags... sometimes people don't care about this and put big, heavy things that easily fall over or just stack cans 5-high right behind my stuff.

If there is a line-up at the grocery store, I do put the bar down behind my groceries for the next person. Usually it's easier than making them try to reach it over all the groceries.
If the person in front of me puts it down for me and at least looks my way, I say thanks. Otherwise no acknowledgement is needed.
I don't think Miss Manners or Emily Post have covered this in their etiquette books, so I don't know what is 'proper'.

That's such a funny question, I just had to answer it. Yes, I do use the seperator bar thingy when I grocery shop. And I always make sure to leave some room on either side of it so the cashier can see it before she rings up the next person's stuff with mine. My pet peeve is when my husband goes grocery shopping with me, and he wedges the seperator bar thingy between our groceries and the next person's so you can't really see it until you get right to it. Such a funny thing to talk about!

I used to work as a grocery store cashier. It was very annoying when people didn't use the bar. Especially when their groceries would mesh with the next person's and they would get angry that I would keep scanning. That's the whole point of the bar!

I put the separator bar up when I start unloading my stuff if someone is ahead of me being served and if I am being served I will put it up for the person behind me so they feel O.K. about putting their stuff up there with mine. Always give the person a smile though. That's the only etiquette I would say there is.

Yes, I do. It lets the other person know that you are done putting things up on the belt. I have had rude people start putting their groceries up when they can clearly see that I still have things in my cart and then I run out of room, so I have to shove their stuff back out of the way.

personally, if the person in front of me has not done so, i'll separate our things with the "bar thingy" & then also put one behind my things and the person behind me. It's just helpfull, I think, to other shopper & the person who's working the register. Either way, If anyone is noticing, I smile, or make some aknowledgement. It certainly dosnt hurt.

Yes. You do... the bar was invented so that the casheer could go quicker through the grocery line and stop when the bar was there; not ringing up two people's items together.

I use it. It's too easy for the cashier to mistake one customer's groceries for another.
And no, I don't feel the need to acknowledge the person behind me unless I make eye contact.
