make sure this is what God is calling you to do... and pray about it. Some people fast 'all food' others fast other things.... tv, computer, music, movies, whatever. Fasting is giving up something that is important to you.

if you are going to do food, you must drink plenty of water... and you can include juice in this as well if you want...

Fasting is something to be done in private, not 'advertising' that you are doing it nor boasting about what you have accomplished. God wants this to be between you and him....

If you need prayer thru this I can help in that area. God Bless

here is a site that could help

Hi Meka - Since this is new for you, it is best to start small. fast maybe 1 or 2 days first. There are water only fasts, and there are liquids only fasts. The thing to remember on a fast is that you are not fasting to overcome any reluctance on God's part. Sometimes people fast with the attitude that they are going to really move God. But really the purpose of fasting is not to move God. He is not the one that's stuck. We are the ones stuck. And what fasting does is get our body and soul more in line to receive from God. I hope that make sense. Spend as much time in the Word and in prayer as you can. Remember that it is fasting AND prayer. And don't just have a list of 'to dos' for God. Worship, reflect, enjoy God. Be much in the Psalms.

Don't be discouraged if you have trouble fasting or if you break it early. You can always try again if you fail; no condemnation if you fall short! Sometimes fasts are a very blessed time, and sometimes you do your fast and only feel hungry. But don't worry about how well you do or do not sense the presence of God during the fast. We are in this for the long haul.

One more thing, break the fast gently, with some fruit or something... NOT with pizza!

You should mentally and physically prepare, don't just jump into a 3 day fast. It's usually recommended for women especially to start with a 1 day juice fast, where you have only juice and lots of water. Pray when you feel hungry. It will keep your mind off of food and help you focus on your prayers. Do that like once a week and after a month or so, you may be able to do a 3 day fast.

Another "fast" is to give up a certain thing, like sweets, carbs, TV, gossip, etc. for a long period. People usually do this during Lent, the 40 days between Mardi Gras and Easter. Use the time you would normally engage in that activity to focus on your prayers.

Fasting of course involves not eating or drinking for a specified period of time or number of meals (most people go for about a day, or two meals at a time). People can, and do, make ajustments for health needs (like if you need to eat a little something with medication).

As your first respondant said, it should definitely be coupled with prayer - about anything you want. What's a big decision or trial your facing?

In my church we also take the money we would have spent on our food and donate it to a fund that helps the needy, but that's entirely up to you if you, as an individual, want to do that or not.

First you should ask your Dr about any health issues you might have and the effect fasting could have on them...

Fasting is personal and between God and The individual... it is probably best if you start with just a day fast and keep yourself hydrated with natural fruit juice and sips of water... if you are truly called to do it you should receive some spiritual benefit from it... if you do not feel God is involved during your fast then call it off.... fasting should be done privately in any case... no one need know you are doing it... if you boast about it you are not fasting for the proper reasons.... total fasting is not advisable... maintain hydration

Your heart needs to be in the right place. What are you going to fast for? Not that you should fast to get something, but if you just want to do it to please God, to show Him that you trust Him and love Him, then do it secretly.

I saw the post about food. It doesn't need to be about food only. In my experience, it can be anything you enjoy. Anything that you are fond of. You abstain for a time to show Him that you are willing to give it up in favor of Him.

He peopbably wont take it from you, you give it willingly. Remember, it's about showing Him that you love Him more than anything.

Remember also, ( I keep remembering things! lol) you can break it. Don't feel guilty if you break it. My fast was sustained for a while and when I felt that I lost focus, I stopped.

I know that this sounds a lot like Lent. But I would remove myself from a tradition that men made. It's personally between you and the God who loves us. It's really personal.

Scripture does not command Christians to fast. It is not something that God requires or demands of Christians. At the same time, the Bible presents fasting as something that is good, profitable, and expected. The Book of Acts records believers fasting before they made important decisions (Acts 13:4; 14:23). Fasting and prayer are often linked together (Luke 2:37; 5:33). Too often, the focus of fasting is on the lack of food. Instead, the purpose of fasting should be to take your eyes off the things of this world, and instead focus on God. Fasting is a way to demonstrate to God, and to yourself, that you are serious about your relationship with Him. Fasting helps you to gain a new perspective and a renewed reliance upon God.

Although fasting in Scripture is almost always a fasting from food, there are other ways to fast. Anything you can temporarily give up in order to better focus on God can be considered a fast (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). Fasting should be limited to a set time, especially when the fasting is from food. Extended periods of time without eating are harmful to the body. Fasting is not intended to punish your flesh, but to focus on God. Fasting should not be considered a “dieting method” either. Do not fast to lose weight, but rather to gain deeper fellowship with God. Yes, anyone can fast. Some may not be able to fast from food (diabetics for example), but everyone can temporarily give up something in order to focus on God.

By taking our eyes off the things of this world, we can focus better on Christ. Fasting is not a way to get God to do what we want. Fasting changes us, not God. Fasting is not a way to appear more spiritual than others. Fasting is to be done in a spirit of humility and a joyful attitude. Matthew 6:16-18 declares, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

I don't know your age or health...so, first check with your doctor...low/high blood sugar, low/high thyroid hormones and so on..can mess you up. And those are just two examples.

If doctor says go ahead...Do you know 'why' you are fasting???

For me, it used to be two parts...One, for cleansing of body and Two, for self discipline. I have found that it has been very productive that I used to fast (before my blood sugar said...'feed me or you'll pay'....) LOL

Start with 8 hours....Water is fine...coffee or tea without sugar or honey or anything else...never seemed to be a bother to me...If you are an absolute purist...water only and not much of that.

Oh, the things you will learn about your body, your mental stamina and about a different sense of being !!!!

You are wise to pursue this....so, 8..then 12..then 18...then 24 hours....I used to fast 40 hours, once a month.

It has been invaluable.

you have to pray and fast as Jesus did! pray without ceasing, you will be tempted just pray for strenght and wisdom and courage to finish the fast. The Lord was tempted by the devil at the end of his 40 day water fast,. Going on a water fast for 1 day is tough but 40 days that had to of been rough for the Lord, but he did it, he prayed without ceasing. Good luck, i did a juice fast for 2 days, i would have went longer but my parents stopped me, I commend you for doing this vry difficult task. Good luck and God Bless you and may he help you through your journey,

P.S. dont let these geniuses on Y answers discourage you!

There are different ways, if you haven't done it before might be best to ease into it by doing a "Daniel fast" (some fruit and vegetables) or by at least drinking juice. I like to listen to worship music or online messages while I'm praying. I highly recommend it, I fasted on Saturday and I felt God's presence in a much stronger way.
