Zenit is a Russian brand. It's an okay camera to play around with and learn photography, but not a really good quality. I have one for the novelty of having something Russian. (As a former Russian linguist in the military, I like collecting Russian items.)
Nikon or Canon are both well worth what you pay. Personally, I prefer Nikon. If you want a real film camera bargain, now is the time, as several photographers are selling off their old equipment to go digital. You can pick up an excellent used Nikon F100 for just a few hundred dollars. This camera used to sell for over a thousand.

I would recommend against the Zenit. While the Zenit may be a reliable camera the availability of accessories/lenses is minimal. The big 5 cameras for 35mm are Nikon, Minolta, Canon, Pentax and Olympus. Try to stay within the big 5 or compatible cameras so that aftermarket lenses and dedicated falshes are available. If you are looking to save a little $ Ricoh and Chinon use the pentax lens systems and offer very dependable results

The CAnon K2 is a best buy in 35mm AT $200
The Nikon D40 is a best buy in Digital SLR followed by the Canon XT at $600 and $700

I picked up an old Zenit from a yard sale several years ago for $2. They are indeed Russian. If you can find one for $2, go for it! Otherwise, get a Canon or Nikon.

I've never heard of that brand. I have a Pentax which I used when I was a journalist, and a Roleiflex before that (which was amazing, and I miss, but it was damaged on an assignment). Do some consumer reports research, maybe call up your local newspaper editor and see what they use.
