Here's my situation: I'm about to sell my POS Saturn SL2 with 140K miles. Can't afford to have a car that is about to die - reliability is a huge concern for me.

I'd like to spend about $20,000 at most because that's what I can afford. I'm not worried about a new car. Because of my good relationship with a mechanic, I'm only interested in cars he specializes in, so I'll only consider Hondas, Toyotas, Acuras, Lexuses, Nissans, and Infinitis.

I'd like to get the best car for the money and I'm not worried about the car being new. I want the best car for the money whether it has 10,000 or 100,000 miles on it. If it makes more sense to pay less, I prefer to.

I realize there can be a million responses to this but I just want a general poll with some suggestions. Most guides will either focus on buying used and saving the most money possible, or buying new and getting the best car possible. I want to buy used not necessarily to be cheap but to have a better car.

For that kind of money you should be able to get a an almost new (one to two years old) Certified Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. You can also get a somewhat new (four to five years old) Certified Acura or Lexus. Buying certified will give you a couple of benefits when it comes to being secure in your buying decision (low miles, no accidents, etc.).

You need to have more than one or two ideas for a car in mind since you may be limited in your choices. You should look in your area to see which of these vehicles are available and then chose based on what you can find. In my area I would probably end up with a Honda Accord since there seem to be a good number of them available to pick from.

that's a lot of money when you have a good mechanic.
You can easily spend half that money on a 7 year accord or a toyota. 15K will buy you an acura TL which is a fabulous car. You might want to consider buying a new car as well if you want to spend the 20k.

The best sedan for that kind of money would be the Nissan Altima. You can buy a 2.5 or a 3.5 v/6 for that. Id suggest going to carmax.com to get your best value either way. the #.5 v/6 is really good in all power ranges and, is excellent on gas.
