to say that you truly understand the bible and the word of god, yet the only explanation you can give for why god does the many unexplainable things that occur in the world is something to the effect of, "only god knows." if you truly understand god, shouldn't you be able to explain his reasoning?

mr. ed... i give you the following question i asked a few days back. assuming the people who answered this question in favor of the clarity of the bible believe the bible to be the word of god, i'd say i didn't jump to any conclusions on this question.

It isn't a contradiction. I understand the things that He has revealed, but not the things He hasn't revealed.
Those things, I have to leave in His hands.

Job 36:26
How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.
Job 37:5
God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.
Isaiah 40:28
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
Psalm 119:34
Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
(I added this verse purely to point out that there is something to what you're saying)
God, though he has revealed himself to us, is beyond our ability to comprehend. God's ways are not the ways of the human race. We share traits in common such as love, justice, and power (mind you, much less than God's...), but on the level of motives (among others), there is a vast gap. Our two biggest motives as human beings are self-gain and the greater good. I don't know why God created humans in the first place... It just doesn't seem to follow logically to me from a human perspective. I mean, God doesn't NEED anything, and given that if he didn't create us, there would be no one else who had need, that eliminates the greater good as a motive. That said, we're here and a man claiming to be the Messiah of the Jews died and rose again, appearing to over 500 of his followers.
I do my best to understand the Bible, but I'm far from an expert. Besides that, the Bible clearly states that God is beyond all understanding.

Poor Christians, always having to justify and explain away the many contradictions of their book of magic. It must be hard trying to think up excuses for 'the perfect word of god'. You would think god would be a little more clear in what he meant. But 33,000 conflicting christian denominations can't be wrong, right?

I don't think it is a contradiction. When you understand God, you understand that he is Love, cares about you, wants goodness for you. You also understand he is WAY smarter than you, unfathomably smarter, and has things going on that you can't imagine comprehending an understanding of some of the things he does.

Like why would God create a planet, and then once make the number one rule "to have no other Gods before Him" and then change it to "Love thy God."
Why does God feel He needs to be the number one priority, when it's obvious that's getting us nowhere.

If we understood the mysteries of God in full, then we would be God. "For now we know in part, seeing through a glass darkly, but then..face to face". (I think I quoted correctly)
