Why is it bad to buy a dog thats not registered by AKC or a different thing and how is it different? Also why shouldnt you buy a dog from a pet store? I got a Dachshund from a pet store and it was kept clean and you got to go in a little room and play with it so it was well socialized with. Also it had no health problems or anything so far. (I want a Chihuahua)

AKC, UKC (United Kennel Club) and CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) are legit registries. They have strict rules and regulations governing purebred dogs, they keep careful records of pedigrees, the members that make up these registries are the Parent Clubs of the breeds represented by the registries. They keep strict standards of the breeds, etc

Other registries also known as scam registries will register anything, don't have strict standards, aren't endorsed by the breed parent clubs, were established so that irresponsible breeders could "register" dogs that weren't able to be registered in a legit registry, can't be proven to be purebred, whose breeders are suspended form doing business with a legit registry, etc. The papers from these type of registries are worthless.

As for pet store puppies..pet store puppies come from mills or other irresponsible sources. They are usually illbred, often have bad temepraments and health issues, aren't always purebred even though sold as such, etc.

CKC (Continental Kennel Club) is NOT bigger then AKC or UKC. It is true it is "easier" to register with them because it is nothing more then a bogus registry that will register virtually anything out there. They are not held in high regard by responsible breeders. No responsible breeder uses scam registries to register their dogs...run fast from breeders that do...

Oh and Great Danes are not a mix of Bull dog and Greyhound. In fact the Great Dane is an ancient breed going back as far as ancient Rome and Greece.. The use of the Egyptian Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound and Mastiff actually created the Dane we have now. The Germans and the English had the most influence in the development of the modern Great Dane.

Some are junk, and will just take money for handing over a ice sounding registration. If you live in the US, only trust the AKC papers. I think there MAY be a reputable registry for rarer breeds, but I am not sure what that is and if your breed is recognized by the AKC you should use that, and if it isn't then you need to look into if it really is a breed before just running off to some junk registry. The Continental Kennel Club, or the CKC (even worse because the legitimate Canadian Kennel Club is also CKC) is horrible. They will accept pictures in replacement of a pedigree. You can write in whatever breed you want, even a stupid mutt name (like a cockapoo). I have heard of people registering rabbits (as a lopadoodle) and a stuffed dog with them, yes with clear pictures. And keep in mind that even the AKC does NOT guarantee quality. It guarantees pedigree, so you know the dog is purebred, but you still need to check that the breeder is actually showing the dogs to be sure they are up to standard, and that they are doing all necessary health screening. ADD: wikipedia is junk as far as reliabily. Sometimes its OK, but come on think about what it is! They have bogus pages for mutts because people post them there. It does not make it true. Use it for quick reference but take everything you read there with a grain of salt.

Pet stores are middle men that are there for one purpose, to make money selling pets. Buying from a "reputable" breeder insures that you're getting a dog from someone who has probably spent years breeding out as many of the undesireable traits that breed may have. All puppies are happy to see anyone after being in a cage all day and night. That's not socialization. That's thanks! A rule of thumb is, "the smaller the dog, the bigger the problem". Many problems in dogs don't show up until they're 2-3 years old. By then, it's a family member, and you'll pour thousands into keeping it healthy. Go to a breeder and get a dog that comes with a lifetime guarantee against temperament, eyes, hips, and breed specific illnesses.
Ask for a pedegree of at least 4 generations, then ask all the breeder you can find about those lines. If you do your homework, you'll have a much better pet.

There is nothing wrong with buying a pet that is not AKC registered. Mixed breeds cannot be registered and many make wonderful pets. There are many wonderful breeders out there that breed AKC dogs only. They do it for the love of the dog and the love of the breed. They want to keep the breeds pure and as disease free as they can. They will even try to make sure their pups have the best genetics possible and try to avoid birth defects. Sadly, you have those few that only look at dollar signs; which are the ones that usually end up running places like puppy mills. They only care about that mighty dollar and the dog's best interest is not at heart. If you feel that you must get an AKC registered dog, please check out the breeders and make sure to get one that is in it for the love of the dog; I am sure there are many wonderful breeders out there. Warning, they will screen you and probably ask you more questions than you ask them because of their love for the breed and they want their dogs to go to the best possible families.
One reason many pets stores are shunned, is they (not all of them) have been linked with puppy mills in the past. So when you buy from a pet store, you cannot check out the facility where the dog was born and lived its first months.
If you are wanting a dog to just have as a part of your family and to love and spoil check with your local shelters first and save a life. However, if you are wanting to show your dog, then you will have to have an AKC breed to get into that. Basically, it is a personal choice, depending on the type you want. Also, if it is a purebred dog that you want, there are rescue shelters for different breeds, which will allow you to find exactly what you are looking for at times. Good luck with your search for a new puppy.

The two previous answers detailed the registry question pretty well.

Pet stores that sell puppies, usually purebreds or the designer "poo" dogs are more likely than not getting thier dogs from puppy mills or commercial breeders. You should never ever support these stores. I know it's tough to do when you are faced with a super cute little puppy, but it is not helping the hundreds of thousands of other dogs and puppies that are suffering.

You really lucked out with the Doxie you got, but I wouldn't suggest that you take the risk again. You can always adopt a homeless pet--even a Chihuahua. Plus if you want to help the puppy mill dogs of the world, many rescue groups take in dogs that were seized or neglected at puppy mills and adopt them out that way.

There are only 2 registries in the US that are reputable, AKC and UKC. The reason why the other registries are not worth the paper that they are printed on is because they will register anything including mutts, like puggles and anything that ends in poo.
There are many reasons you should not buy puppies from pet stores. One, almost all of the puppies come from puppy mills where the only concern is that the broker gives them money for the puppies that are pumped out at every heat cycle. Second, the parents are not health tested and no telling what diseases that they may carry. Third, the pet store does not screen the buyers the only thing that matters is that you have the money for the puppy. Finally, dogs that spend most of their lives in small cages are not properly socialized. There are many more reasons but I do not have the time to go in depth on it. You can google pet store puppies and puppy mills to get more information.
You are lucky that your dog is healthy, because many of them are not.

There is nothing wrong with buying an unregistered dog, unless you are planning on breeding or showing. It is far better to buy an unregistered dog, than one registered with kennel clubs other than AKC or UKC in USA, and Canadian Kennel club in Canada.
the 'fake' clubs are created for puppy mills and backyard breeders who have dogs that are unregisterable through a reputable organization.
My friends were trying to settle an argument about CKC (continental kennel club) and submitted the 3 required pics of a dog, and it's name and names of parents, etc. The dog was accepted for registry. and became a registered Norfolk Terrier..Although it was actually an AKC Pomeranian.
It cost them $20 to prove their point, but they had a nice wall hanging out of it..
when a dog is not registered with a reputable club, there is a reason for it, generally because it wasn't of breeding quality or often a little mixed bred. My spouse's aunt used to do that, and sold lots of CKC registered dogs who's parents were only 1/2 bred (mutts). She just chose the breed that their apprearance was most like.

Ok seen enough from the answers. I am a reputable Chihuahua Breeder. AKC only recognizes Purebred dogs. However some of the gogs they recognize are in fact mixed breeds, such as the Great Dane bred many years ago in Germany for hunting dogs. They are a mix between a bulldog and a greyhound.

CKC which I belong to recognize purebreds and designer dogs. CKC is the Conntinental Kennel Club, and AKC is American Kennel Club. CKC is a much bigger club and are a very informative club.

A Chihuahua, a true Chihuahua, is purebred and can be AKC or CKC. Chihuahuas make great pets, and are very protective of their homes and owners. If you get one as a pup, teach early not to bite or yap. They are very smart, and can be sneaky. They are also low maintenance pets.

You can search at Google for CKC and there is a wealth of info. I belong to AKC and CKC some of my pets hold both. I prefer CKC. Much easier to deal with. A lot of breeders are switching to CKC.

Pet stores: You need to buy from a national pet store with great staffing. They take better care of the animals, and keep it clean to reduce the risk of diseases. Petco is my favorite. They also have on call Vets. Every Chihuahua I sell has a certificate of health and a guarantee. So that is something else to consider. Look at the blood line, I disaprove of innerbreeding.

Everyone I sell to has to sign a contract. I have to meet and discuss things with the buyer. If I don't like what they say. No sale. Also I take one of my older dogs, if they alert on a person, no sale. Dogs do know bad people.
