There are a lot of variables that could lead to this situation. For example, your daughter's presence and behavior, your pet's age, gender, health, disposition and past events could all lead up to a sudden change in your pets behavior. It is important to realize that there are different reasons for a dog to exhibit aggressive behavior, including fear and dominance. To truly get to the bottom of this and to avoid a potentially dangerous situation, I would bring your dog in for a physical exam (rule out any health problems for a change in temperment) and then consult with a recommended dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Until you can get that done, please try your best to avoid situations which will cause your dog to growl. Best of luck.

Does your daughter live at home fulltime?? It could be that she feels that she is alpha over her for some reason.
I have also seen dogs suddenly growl at people who are sick, or have cancers, things like that, or even pregnant women..
Dogs are very perceptive, if there are no health issues with your dog, and nothing new or different in the home etc.. I honestly would get your daughter to go for a complete physical.

I only need to read the first few lines of what you wrote. Think of your household as being a pack - dogs think like that. There is an alpha Male and and alpha female, then there is everyone else - they fight for position in the pack. Being the new pack-member, your child is viewed as upsetting this whole setup. Every time you touch your child - without some corresponding contact with your dog - is viewed as evidence that your dog is losing status. He plainly doesn't like this, as is seen by his change in behaviour. Unfortunately the only thing I can suggest is to remove the dog - he will become increasingly aggressive towards your child AND THE TWO SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT ALONE.

How old is the dog? My dog was around myself and my girlfriend all the time. One day he started growling at her randomly. The Vet told us that it is kind of like a teenager rebelling. When a dog gets to a certain age, they may begin to test the waters for their pecking order in the pack.

Is your dog spoiled? The dog might think of itself as the leader of the pack. It could be intimidated by your daughters presence because it could be threatened that it will lose it's alpha status with her around.

Sometimes, dogs see things in a person that other people can't see. Maybe she is getting very sick.
