There is more than one kind of Christianity. Catholicism is just one kind.

A true Catholic is a true Christian. They are one and the same. In the early church there was one mainline church and they referred to themselves as being universal "catholic". The other sects were Gnostic's, and other weird quasi-christian cults. There were no Protestants until the 16th century when a disgruntled Catholic priest started a movement in protest of the pope.

The idea that the Bible was the only source of authority for the Christian was invented by anti-catholics in the 16th century. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that the Bible is the only authority. In fact it says just the opposite: 2 Thess 2:15 says, "Stand firm and hold to the traditions which we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us." This means we are to uphold both oral and written traditions.

Protestants ignore this admonition and change God's word so that the Bible is to stand alone. Protestants ignore many of God's instructions and instead place human traditions above those of God. Then they go about accusing Catholics of following human traditions.

I do not worship statues. Catholics do not worship statues. They are forbidden to by the 10 commandments. Catholics however do use statues, and other artworks to serve as a focus point so that we may be reminded what we are praying about. Statues have no spiritual significance other than that of a symbol.

I think a true Catholic is a person who follows the Catholic Law to the letter. I know a lot of people who firmly stands by the Catholic canons.

Unfortunately, in our country, Catholics think they can pick and choose which canons that apply to them. For example, the Catholic Church is against abortion but some Catholics turn the other way.

That is the main challenge for the Catholic Church. How do you live a "True" Catholic lifestyle when the country you live in standards are just the opposite?

One is considered to be Catholic by being baptized into the Catholic Church or converting to the Catholic Church. That is all it takes to be considered a "Catholic." What is a "true" Catholic, though? I like the answer that it's the same as a true Christian. I think it's going to mean different things to different people.

For me, it means loving God with all your heart and mind and soul, following Jesus as best you can, and being as true to the teachings of the Catholic Church as your well-formed conscience dictates. On one hand, blind obedience doesn't seem healthy, but if there is THAT much in Catholic teachings that you disagree with, then why do you remain with the Catholic Church?

Bottom line for us all - God knows our hearts and our innermost workings. God alone will be our judge.

Which kind of Catholic are you looking for?

There are Roman Catholics. There are Anglican Catholics. Byzantines, Coptics, Greek, Greek Orthodox, Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites, Syriac, Syro-Malabar.

Some of these are under the Holy See. Some, such as the Anglicans and Orthodox have split from Rome. The hope is that we will all some day come back together.

You'll need to define your question a little bit better.

Friend Little Ferret, I have to disagree with your description of a true Catholic. You are just as true as your friend.

God does not want mindless automotons. Nor does our pope. We are human. We have failings. When we do our best we are "true."

A true catholic is a person who reads the Bible at least once a week, goes to Sunday Mass, goes to all Holy days of Obligation, and goes to confession at least once a month. I personally am not a "true Catholic" but I do practice the religion, and try to follow it as much as possible. My Good Friend is a true Catholic, and she follows the religion right down to the last prayer.

Okay, so you have 'found us out' ... we are a DIVERSE church, and can believe any of MANY DIFFERENT THINGS and still 'worship' in the 'same church' ... and we are ALL 'true Catholics' ... basically all that is 'the same' is the belief that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and that the 'Eucharist' we take (flat bread and wine) is 'communion with others who believe the same thing.' I know ... that's WAY TOO EASY ... but it is the way it is ... and I think that is GRAND!

Like any religion, or any identity for that matter, the definition of "catholic" is up for negotiation. If someone doesn't answer the question "straight" it's probably for the best. The worst possible thing to happen to any religious identity is for it to be solidified and ossified.
