In the news the other day I learned that there are food deserts in the U.S. Meaning there are urban areas where there are no supermarkets, only fast food restaurants that feature high fat content offerings.

In order to reduce the percentage of the population that's obese, we need to educate the public on the dangers of unhealthy eating.

The most important thing we can do is give more funding to schools so that children have healthy and delicious meals available. Most kids eat junk food like fries, chips and soda at school on a daily basis, and that needs to change. Unfortunately, schools receive funding from junk food manufacturers for selling their foods to the children, but if the schools had enough funding, they wouldn't have to put the childrens health at risk. If the government gave the schools more funding, they wouldn't need to turn to large corporations, and they could provide healthy meals to students. If junk food isn't available for students, they will eat better, and hopefully take those healthy eating habits into their adult years.

Another idea that might help is to tax junk food higher, and tax revenue from the junk food could help cover the extra funding the schools need.

One of the reasons behind America's bulging waistlines is that our meals are calorie laden. A typical Japanese meal treats meat as more of a side dish, rather than the main component. Also, many people simply do not get off their butts and exercise. Watching television has become the most popular activity by far.

Fast food restaurants need to introduce healthy meal options and do away with 'super size' portions.

In the end, our nation as a whole can help teach children good eating habits by offering healthy meals in the schools. But, besides educating the adult population, taxing them more for junk food, and offering them more choice, there's not much more we can do, as it's up to each adult to make that choice for themselves.

it will never happen.

there is more knowledge available today than every regarding health and nutrition. with the Information Age and now the Internet all of this information regarding diet and exercise is available to all, and it's not top secret. people don't care, they eat what taste good regardless if it's not healthy or high in calories. too many people think that the medical world will solve their health problems with a pill. only 15% of the US population gets regular exercise yet everyone knows it should be performed almost daily. people make up excuses for everything. our society is lazy and is just getting worst.

Outlaw all fried foods. Make 60 minutes of exercise per day requiered in all PK - 12 schools. Give tax breaks or job incentives for all workers who go to the gym. Remove all soda machines from schools, daycares, hospitals, universities, and anywhere else that recieves federal or state funding. Increase the "fat tax", if it costs .99 cents now and is bad for you, make it cost $5.00. Use the additional tax money to fund medical research or something productive. If a food is good for you make it a reasonable price so people would be incouraged to buy and eat it. When exporting food to other nations, add a fat tax to it of 2%. Use that money to fund the cost of everyone going to the gym.
