Hm well If you want a correct answer for that, you'll never get just one.
People get tattoos and Piercings for many reasons. They may get a tatt because it was the thing to do, or because it looked cool. They could have gotten it because it had special meaning to them, or it could have been an act of rebellion. It in either way is a piece of art. Yes it will be there till the person dies, or they pay for it to be removed, but it will always be a part of them. And for that you would have to ask them. I got mine because I was making a statment, a choice about my beliefs. I am proud to have it, but I am also looking to get more.
As for Piercings, men and women get them for again various reasons. Some conisder them sexy, or they consider it cool. Mine were because I thought it was sexy, and interesting.
But the reasons why anyone does anything they do to thier bodies is as varied as the amount of people who do it.
If you are asking this to know why, good luck. Because out of the few people who do answer this, there are millions more reasons for the people who don't.

It's different for different people. For some, it's a form of rebellion, they want to be different and espress themselves. We all choose to enterpret out self-espression in different ways, for some, it's tattoos and piercings. Self-expression is a much better reasoning than trying to be sexy which is why a lot of people get them. They view it as some kind of seduction, but it comes off as more poseresque. Like that stupid tattoo people get of a butterfly on their lower back, it may be sexy, but it has no meaning. If you must get a tattoo, get one that means something to you, not just something pretty, because pretty pictures belong on paper, not on your body! Then of course there are those people who get them because they just plain don't know what to do with themselves, lol.

Most people get tattoos to mark a special time, thing, or person in their life. Some people get them to display their own artwork, think of your body as your personal canvas. I think most people get piercings for the fashion of it, they just like the way it looks, or they enjoy getting the piercings.

It depends on the person.
Some people find them dangerous, or that it makes them feel like rebels. For others they are cultural items, or they can be rights of passage.
Personally, for me, I have always found them fascinating, and I wanted to get a piece of art on my body that I would be proud of. I waited until I was 22 to get mine, I looked for an artist to make what I had in my head, and thus far I am very pleased with it 4 years later and the compliments I receive when people see it.
Its on my shoulder blade so I don't get "judged" by it, and its only visible when appropriate.

You mean steal them from other people? That would be kind of hard since a tattoo is a very permanent mark on ones own body, not to mention that it would be painful for the person your trying to steal it from.

do you mean why do people get them?
if so...
for the love of body modification for some. just being able to express yourself. standing out. or just the love or attraction to whatever.
I personally love body art. piercings, tattoos ear gauging.
i don't care what anyone thinks. I have a career path that accepts that. I stab people (piercer)

Why do women take wiping and smearing crap on their faces? Adornment and beauty! A tattoo is also a written record or diary of something important. I lost my 2 daughters. Their names are on me and with me forever. My wife committed suicide - she is with me forever. As is my mother and father. Piercings are ornamental - never wore a ring, earrings or a necklace?

Many people like myself have tattoos because we like the design, to remember someone who has died or that we love. Yes it can be painful in varying degrees and yes we have thought about them carefully and yes we do realise we can have them for life. I lost my children and I have 3 dolphins with ribbons for each of them with their name on the ribbon so that although I will never see them again, they will always be part of me.

I cannot speak for everyone; only myself. I had a tattoo of a cross done last year to remind myself of my commitment to my faith. Even though Christianity may frown on such things I felt my decision was unique to me and I alone will have to answer for it. I suppose on a larger scale individuals have these things done as a means of rebellion or out of spite. I have no plans for additional tattoos, but have no regrets on having mine done.
