They instinctually know. In the wild they want to excrete in sandy or soft soil. Cat litter simulates that indoors and so cats will seek out first to pee.

You may have to train them to go in the litter box. It all depends if the kitten came from a house cat or not. If it is from a wild cat it may need to be trained. If it does it's business on the floor pick up the cat and with toilet paper pick up the mess if you can and put them both in the litter box and they will eventually get the jest of it.

They usually know

First thing I did when I brought my cats home from the shelter after I adopted them, was to let them out of the carrier, show them their food and then put them near the litter box so they knew where it was

Baby kittens are taught by their mama cats.

You can always put the cat in the litterbox and Gently use its front paw to scratch at the litter. Cat WILL get the message. Praise it too, gently talk to it.

Don;t put the litterbox next to anything noisy or scary-- put it in a peaceful place and leave it there so the cat knows where to go.

You have to train them. If you have another cat that is litter trained sometimes the cat will copy the trained one. My cat trains her kittens to use the litter box, so we have no problems. But cats do not normally know to use the litter. you have to show them. And when it does it the first time, don't clean it right away. They will follow their nose back to it. After a couple of times, then clean it. Your cat will know where to go by then.

Usually, their mom trains them when they're kittens, as long as there's a litter box nearby. And cats have a natural instinct to dig and cover their waste, so if they were orphaned or for some reason aren't trained, you can teach them pretty easily by putting them in the box not long after they've eaten. For the most part, they'd much rather use a box than your carpet! That's one of the reasons it's so much easier to get a kitten than a puppy.

It really depends on the cat. Some cats hate litter boxes and refuse to use them from the start and some use it without complaint. Before buying a cat you should have one ready just in case.

If their mother knew how to use a litter box and they were left w/ her for about 8 weeks they will know how to use it. if their mother did not know then they will not know. If they go to the bathroom on the floor pick up the feces and put it in he litter box. Then take the cat and put it in the box gently take its paw and cover the feces. This should work after a while.

I think they do. I made sure that they would, though. I showed our cats where it was and put them in it to show them what it was. They all knew or figured out how to use it. Even the feral ones.

Cats are pretty smart. Usally all you have to do is show where to go. There are always those who need to be shown more than once though.
