Three great exercises to improve your hapkido skills.

Grips- Few ways to go about this,
a. Take a heavy sword-like structure and
swing it in general movements that
you've been taught.
b. Get a big bag (roughly around 2 or 3
gallons) fill half way with sand. Then over
and over again pick up the bag from the
floor, releasing each time you put it down.
c. Combine a wieght some rope and a stick.
hold the stick out shoulders hieght, roll the
stick until the rope is around it and the
wieght is touching the stick. roll back
down and repeat.

When I was taking Kuk Sool Won we had to practice with a metal railing of a fence, but I'm sure you can use a barbell (no plates) and just practice the movements slowly with the added weight. Or you can put on wrist weights and use the wooden sword. You will get stronger and that in turn will make you faster.

Have you taken tai chi? The movement started out as very slow, but you learn a type of relaxation that can add speed to your movement. This may help. Also, if you can study Iaido, the art of sword drawing.
