If your car idles erratic (goes up and down), it is probably the fuel pressure regulator. I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires, dist cap and rotor, fuel pumps and rewired the engine wiring harness and still had the problem. I then changed the fuel pressure regulator and it ran great again. The part is about $50-60 from Volvo.

If your car idles a little rough, I would check for a vaccuum leak. Check the vaccuum hoses and spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold. You may also have a bad intake manifold gasket. Also, check the intake plenium (rubber part) for cracking. I had to change this part also.

Good luck!

by unplugging air mass unit you force computer into limp home mode [starting and off idle performance will be affected] but if general improvement is noted in drivability then air mass sensor replacement is needed [ to prevent future troubles replace the thermostat inside the air cleaner housing] thic controls the damper door for heated air from the exhaust manifold heat door should be fully closed by 100-120 degrees F

is your car a turbo or not? i would check the mass airflow sensor for faults, and possibly a bad oxygen sensor. if it is a turbo look for weak rubber airflow hoses that collapse under acceleration.
