When you are born into a religion there is a baptism of sorts and rituals of initiation. When life as we know it leaves our bodies there are more prayers and rituals before sending off.
Thats good, but I am more interested in that great period between birth and death. One is a Catholic, Hindu , Jew, Muslim , Buddhist Sikh etc not really by choice. . We are compelled to follow from a very young age . We are thrust with fear of a furnace of fire and damnation in a place called hell and joy of salvation in a place called heaven.
Between birth and death we can be poor and destitute, rich and famous , blind, lame, deaf, dumb, whole , black, yellow , brown ....
In societys vast mixi of human life forms all trying to reach God through his prophets, man yet waged bloody war on each other through these centuries. It seems we are getting worse by the day and are about to destroy the planet .

If we did not have religion and mankind brought up seeking inner peace through meditation....?

There was not inner peace before Religion, look at the ancient groups of nomads, Huns. All of the tribes that roamed Europe were constantly at war with each other.

I was born into the Protestant Faith, but spent years studying other faiths even Islam and decided to become a Christian Catholic.

Evil people will use any motivation at their disposal to get people to follow them and give them power, or let them keep power. Just because these people will even stoop to invoke Jesus in their reason for killing, does not mean that Jesus is the cause of the killing, so you cannot blame Christianity for those deaths.

True, Christians have done their share of wrong over the decades, but you have to understand that they were NOT following the example of Jesus when they did those things.

Modern Christianity has asked for forgiveness for those wrongs.

Hope this helps!

Peace!

You're right. And those of us who rejected the beliefs we were born into, have done so with great contemplation. Whether it be a change of religion or a complete rejection of religion, it is usually not an easy thing to do. I was raised Protestant. Yet I am now an Atheist. Religious people assume I don't know about Jesus/god. They shouldn't assume. I KNOW all about christianity and I reject it. And I abhor religion for the very reasons you stated: bloody war.

Religion is a blessing for the individual (the ones that need it anyway) and a scourge to society as a whole, the ones who want it and the ones who don't.

Nice question, great details. In my own opinion, if man searched for inner peace through meditation, we might be better off, though I also beleive that if mankind had nothing to beleive in or hope for after death, It would slowly drive him insane bringing out a more primal, savage person.

a little bit of both i think... in giving people the confidence, i've given this example a few times, i think of religion as dumbo's feather. it gives people the confidence in themselves to believe they can do whatever they want. in this way i would say it's a blessing.
however, as far as dividing people, in the sense that most faiths differ on the grounds that they believe their god is the right god, and anyone who believes differently will not make it into heaven, therefore you go elsewhere. this is very dangerous thinking, and should not be encouraged to be spread. in this way i would say it's a scourge.

Meditation is specific to some but not all religions. Hence-it is a religious belief.
