My cousins and I were playing Spades (not gambling) just for fun, but my aunt didn't want the card playing in her house. We went to my house to play instead. What do Christians have against any card playing games?

There is nothing essentially sinful about playing with cards. Apart from gambling, playing cards is essentially no different than playing a board game. Cards can be played with chips (or other substitutes) instead of money. If gambling is removed from the “equation” – I see nothing wrong with a friendly game of cards. The key is playing in moderation, not allowing it to become an obsession, and avoiding the temptation towards gambling.

It's a traditional thought pattern. The Bible doesn't condemn all gambling even. It does say that a foolish man will gamble it all away. But playing with cards caught on as a sin, I think around the time it was thought to be sinful to see the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Perhaps even before that.

It's a silly thing that I think is based upon ignorance of the scripture. Ask her to find it in the Bible where it says that. If she shows you, could you tell me?

I'm not sure. Perhaps because it can be associated with gambling or lead to gambling in the future. Playing cards can become highly addictive to some people also. Most likely it could be a waste of time, in a frivolous way, when you could be doing something more worthwhile.

Not all Christians are against card games. Some Christians think that playing such a game would lead to gambling. It's called legalism.

The old people might take it as gambling even if there is no money, just the mentallity. I personally think its okay to play cards as long as you don't gamble. And by gambling, giving away half your house cause you have no self control

I am a christian, and as far as i know there is nothing wrong with card playing for fun? Maybe when you ask your aunt she can tell us also? Could be something she is already aware of and other people do not know this. Could be very interesting to know!
When choosing best answer, i would like to see your comment on what she had to say- could be something important.

I don't think all Christians think card games are evil.

I think that belief stems from the old "idle hands do the devil's work" system of belief.
Or, maybe it has something to do with gambling.

I certainly don't think playing card games is evil or sin or anything. But, there are a lot of things I don't consider evil that other Christians probably do.

Very few Christians think this way! I see nothing wrong with playing cards for fun. There is no sin in playing games.

I am a Christian and I play spades. I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't see anything wrong with a little gambling either as long as it is not taking money away from the well being of your family.

God bless,
Stanbo

Its an old ultra-conservative view. They associate any card game with gambling. Its crazy. We play card games in our church building.
