The other people answered how long you boil it for.
How to tell when it's hard boiled...lay it on it's side and give it a good spin. If it's hard boiled it'll stand up on one end just like a top!
Something else to do with an egg...lay an egg that you know is not hard boiled on it's side and give it a good spin. Before it stops spinning, touch the top of it with one fingertip just barely long enough to stop it's spin. Take you fingertip off of it right away! If you do this right the egg will start to spin again, all by itself!
The egg starts to spin again because you've stopped the shell from spinning but the yolk hasn't stopped yet, so when you let it go, it's spins a couple more times.
It's fun, try it :-)

I'm seeing answers that would really overcook the eggs. What I do is put my eggs in a pan, don't overcrowd and cover with cold water. As soon as your water boils, set your timer for 7 minutes. Once the time is up, turn off the heat and keep in the pan until the water has cooled. I guarantee the eggs will come out perfectly cooked and not have any green on the yolk.

This will give you perfect hard-boiled eggs every time.

Put the eggs in a pan and cover with about an ince of cold water.
Cover and bring to a boil.
As soon as the water starts boiling, remove the pan from the heat and let it sit for 18 minutes.
Immediately remove the eggs from the water and put them in ice water to stop the cooking.

Trust me, they will be perfect every time.

My father did this little trick, actually works...boil for about 8 mins, take a spoon lift the egg out of the boiling water and if the water evaporates quickly (a second or so) (egg looks dry) the egg is hard boiled. If this doesn't happen, return it to the water and test again in another minute or so.

Has never failed for me.

OK, here's how. Put the egg in cold water in a pot and bring it just to a boil. Turn off the heat, put on a lid and let it sit for ten minutes. Then run cold water into the pot until the water is no longer hot. And now - - -can you peel this egg?

FOOL-PROOF HARD-BOILED EGGS

Place eggs in pan of COLD water. Bring to a rapid boil. Cover, remove from heat, and let sit for 18 minutes. Dump out water and run cold water over eggs for 5 minutes. Refigerate.

Been using this method for 20 years. Never fails me!

To find out if an egg is HB lay it on it's side and give it a spin if it's HB it will stand up on end if it's raw it won't. I boil my eggs for 13 to 14 minutes.

start with cold water on high heat. they should be done 15 minutes after it starts to boil. if you are not sure if they are done spin the egg on its side. only boiled eggs spin. once its done boiling run them under cold water otherwise they will still cook and turn rubbery.

its a good idea to poke pinholes in the bottom (fat) end of the egg so they dont crack as they are boiling. The hole helps release the steam as they are cooking for about 10 minutes.
Procter Silex makes an egg cooker...you may want to look into it.
