I need to know how many vaccines he should get, for what, approximate cost, and at what age he is to get each one? Kind of like a schedule I can keep. He'll turn 3 in June. Thanks!

I follow a minimal vaccination protocol for my dogs - rabies, distemper, parvo, coronavirus every 3 years, and stagger them so that they don't get the rabies shot the same year as all the others.

Over-vaccination is harmful to your pets. The following documents show two different vaccination schedules. In the first document, a pdf, it shows all the possible vaccinations and lists them as "core", "non-core", and "not recommended". I give only the core vaccinations to my dogs every three years: rabies, parvo, distemper, and coronavirus. And I stagger them so that they will not get a rabies shot the same years as the others.

You may have different requirements in your area, especially legal requirements for the rabies vaccination.

Assuming he has had all of his puppy vaccinations and his one year booster he will only need a vaccination for distemper/parvo/canine hepatitis/adenovirus-2 and a rabies vaccination. These wil be good for 3 years (unfortunately in some states they require a yearly rabies vaccination so check to see what your state laws are.

Lepto, parainfluenza, lymes and kennel cough (bordatella) aren't recommended for all dogs...so unless your dog is at high risk of exposure to any of these illnesses then there is no need to vaccinate for them or have them contained in any vaccine as a combo.

Coronavirus, giardia and adenovirus-1 are NOT recommended for ANY dog so stay away from any vaccine containing these.

To learn more visit the AAHA site, Dr. Jean Dodds or Dr. Ron Schultz sites . If possible get a copy of the november 2006 Whole Dog Journal. It has a wonderful easy to understand article on vaccinations

Just so you can find out breed information. You own a Shih Tzu . The shots depend on what shots he's had and your locale. Different areas of the country have different issues.

Some areas worry about Lyme disease, some have Leptospirosis.

Talk to your vet. Prices will vary depending on your area also. What might seem cheap in CA might be expensive in MO.

Your vet should have all the info. including prices. You can also check with other vets in the area. Or find out if you local petstores or feed stores do shot clinics (if money is an issue).

regards

Assuming that your dog has already had all of its puppy shots, all it need is rabbies. You can either get a rabbies shot that lasts 1 year or 3 years.

It depends on what vaccinations he's had already and when he had them. Gather his shot records and check with your vet.
