It may be a really silly question... but I just moved into a new apartment and now have a gas stove - something I've never used before. I know it's easy and everything but I'm still inclined to use alternative methods if I can.

Now my question: can you use a crockpot turned on high to cook things like pasta and hard-boiled eggs?

your pasta yes, hard boil eggs try putting a microwave safe bowl filled with water in the microwave. Bring to a boil carefully add eggs nuke for 2 more min. Let them set until water has cooled to the point where you can put your hand comfortably in the water, and they are done. I was like you a little sceptable about using my new gas stove. It took a little getting use to and allot of complaining from my family about the choice for their meals. That was two years ago. Now you couldn't pay me to cook on an electric stove. Good luck take it slow and ease into it. Soon you will laugh at yourself like I laugh at myself now.

I may have been a cook, but I hate gas stoves like you do. I used to have an electric one in my former home. I grew up using electric. Now I have a gas stove that sucks. I swear it has 3 settings. High, which doesn't boil anything if something is on another burner. Simmer which will either not cook things or scorch them, you pick. And low, where the burner always goes out.

Good luck, and pray for a new electric stove.

You should learn to work with the gas stove. They're actually much nicer to use than electric ones. I'd just recommend to look at the flame rather than the "low, medium, high" settings. Don't be afraid of it. It would take you FOREVER to do pasta or boil eggs in a crockpot. Not worth the trouble!
You'll get used to the stove with time and experience.

I have never tried it, but I doubt that it would work very well. Crockpots are designed to cook things slowly and therefore will not get the water to the boiling point very fast, if ever. My suggestion is not to be afraid to use a gas range. I have cooked on both gas and electric, and prefer gas by far because you can better regulate the temperature. However, if you are determined not to use gas, I would try to find out if they still make electric hotplates (I believe that is what they are called), they would definitely do the job.

Omg - you will be cooking those two things all day!

Trust me, get acquainted with your stove!

Just follow the directions on the pasta box, or for eggs, start them in cold water & bring to a slow boil. Boil for 3 minutes, remove pan from heat & let them sit for 15 minutes before running under cold water, and peeling.

Don't worry, use the gas stove. The only difference between gas and electric is, when you turn the heat down or up on a gas stove, it's instantaneous, while the electric plates take time to cool down.
To resume, it's way easier to cook on gas.

Good luck

The point of a crock pot is to SLOW cook foods that benefit from this.

Cooking pasta and boiling eggs are both quick cooking items, so it's unrealistic to try them in a crock pot. Also, I doubt that the crock pot has a high enough temperature to truly boil an egg.

You need to get used to your gas stove. Your question shows you are afraid of it.

the pasta yes but eggs no not in any resonable amount of time. a gas stove is way better than a electric. they add a ton of sulphur to natural gas so that you can smell a leak so dont be afraid of that. and as long as its a new stove you will have no problem lighting it.

sounds like you need to stop letting that stove have so much control over you and how you do things,if you don't stop being afraid of it and tackle learning how to cook on it you will keep running for things all your life!!! i know a lady who still wont learn how to drive and she 60 and can get rides to work so she about to loose a job she had had for years 25 yrs and for no reason! just go in there and learn how to do it ,it wont bite you or eat you! start with putting the flame on low and going easy at first then as you become more comfortable it will become second nature to you just like walking and learning how to ride the bike ,and reading, and doing laundry...imagine how things would be if you didn't know how to do these things!! have fun good luck

Nope

Gas can be scary at first but over time you will find gas is actually much nicer to cook on as you can control the temp almost immediately unlike electric burners which take time to heat up and cool down.

However while you are getting used to it - or in lieu of using it at all you can always purchase a single burner electrical hotplate. (In America they are about $10.00 at discount stores)
