I am a wedding planner, florist, and our shop caters. Our shop is hired mostly because alot of brides want their Mothers, Grandmothers and other members of their families to enjoy the day with them than it being a big stress ordeal.
We also are hired by brides to keep alot of Mothers, Grandmothers and well meaning family members from taking control of their wedding.
For instance this past weekend we did a beautiful wedding for a Bride. The Mother of the Bride paid for the flowers for a wedding gift. The friday before the wedding she decided not to ware what her daughter had ask her to and she bought a dress in a salmon color. Which didnt go with any of the colors the bride had pick out. On top of this she wanted to change the Brides bouquets. To enhance "Her" dress! ( I know your mouth just hit the desktop) We wouldnt budge. No salmon color went into the bouquets even with threats of her not paying for the arrangments. Flowers were delivered as the Bride intended. Mother bought a dress the bride had ask for and the wedding went on as plan.
Nothing was ever said to the Bride about the Mothers intentions which kept everything in the family on the topic at hand and that was her daughters wedding.
Thats just part of what we do. We are the ones if your having an out door wedding you have always dream of and you have nothing but high winds and it pours rain. Were your back up plan. We are so much more than 10% of your wedding plan. We are the ones that see to it that you dont colapse but get to enjoy your day with your new husband and the new beginning of your life. We take your dream of a perfect wedding and turn it into reality. For this our Brides have rated us 5 stars. We are still a small business but an award winning business. God Bless You and Your Groom and we wish all the Brides a Beautiful Wedding Day.

Yeh, 10% does seem like lot. I used a wedding consultant, only because she was a friend of my mother's, and she saved me some money especially on the flowers. My wedding planner had a set price, not a percentage of the budget.
For me the most important thing she did was organized the actual ceremony, you know who walks when, and made sure everyone was ready and in place. She also cleaned up after the ceremony making sure all the flowers were taken from the church to the reception.
Good luck.

No, i really wouldn't want a wedding planner to plan my wedding because a wedding only comes once in a lifetime (hopefully) and the memories are the only things that last. Memories of the planning are just as important as that of the day itself. I really believe that the wedding will be more special if the couple plans it and makes all the choices by themselves, and they could keep the extra cash and splurge on an extra great honeymoon trip instead!

NO, and they don't bring down the prices... all of them I talked to acted like they were getting you a deal while really I could have gotten that price. Also 10% is a huge fee, I would never spend a couple of thousand dollars on a wedding planner unless I was so rich, I had money to throw out. Also my church and my cater have a free wedding planner that you get when you book their services. Both have been extremely nice and helpful.

Wedding Planners more than pay for themselves.
I have been one for 5 years -- 10% of the budget may seem like a lot but I normally get my couples such big discounts because I have so many great relationships with suppliers that I more than pay for my services.

Most wedding consultants are willing to work within your budget. That's one of the first questions they ask! Not only are they a great help managing your time and taking the stress of you and your family, they have great inside tips and tricks as well as a list of vendors to help you get the best deal and most importantly stay within your budget! I think they're worth money that they can potentially save you.....and you're saved the headache as well! This is probably your first wedding....and they will have a range of experience! You could check around by word of mouth and online to see if you can get someone who's just starting in the business, but may have a wealth of personal experience. Always ask to see pictures of their works and names of vendors that they work with!

To me getting a wedding planner is no fun. The whole point of getting engaged is to plan the wedding. But if you get a wedding planner then its definetely less stress on you. Its totally up to you. If its within your budget you could do it.
Congrats and good luck!

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED ON HOW MUCH WORK
IS INVOLVED IN PLANNING A WEDDING. I THINK 10%
IS OKAY. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE
DAY AND SO DOES YOUR FAMILY . LET SOMEBODY
ELSE STRESS OUT . ISN'T THAT WHY THEY ARE
GETTING PAID. ANY WAY YOU SHOULD HIRE A PLANNER AND GO WITH THE FLOW...... I WISH YOU
A WONDERFUL WEDDING AND HOPE U LIVE
HAPPILY EVER AFTER......................

I would do all the planning myself, and minimal costs. If I hired someone... to plan it for me or at least help.... I would be spending money I know I wouldn't need to, plus I could do things my own way and spend the money I feel should be spent.

No, because it's more fun and better to have family and friends help, rather than a stranger. I want people I know to deal with my wedding, who I know will do things for our benefit, not because they are getting paid for it.
