Does anybody know if pregnant women are giving drug tests as part of prenatal care? Or are they only tested once the child is born?

Jeez... I'm NOT PREGNANT and i DON'T USE DRUGS. I'm doing a presentation on child neglect for school...I was gonna suggest that drug screening should be part of prenatal care, but first I wanted to find out whether that's already happening.
Thanks for the answers though!

The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that testing pregnant women for illicit drugs without their consent is considered an illegal search under the Fourth Amendment.
But I think once the baby is born, especially if the baby is showing signs of drug withdrawal or addiction, then a drug test is given to the baby. Some women have lost their newborn babies that way.

Pregnant women are not routinely drug tested during pregnancy or after giving birth. But if the doctor suspects drug use he'll probably order a toxicology screen.

First of all, Using drugs while pregnant can cause deformity, so stop until the baby comes out. Second of all, If someone finds out that you are using drugs you could lose custody of your child....be careful

Does it matter? If you are not using drugs you have nothing to worry about. If you are you need to get help so that your baby won't suffer from your lifestyle. Life is hard enough; don't make your baby have the disadvantage of being born to a messed up mom.

Be honest with your doctor even if you are using illegal drugs. S/he can help you try to minimize the damage done to the baby. Drug addiction is very difficult to control, but docs are certainly aware of the problem and aren't going to punish you for it!

well i dont think they are but if the baby is born ill they will likely lose their parental rights ... their best bet would be to stop taking drugs and think about that life growing inside them.. that helpless little life that doesnt deserve to be abused in that way... that helpless little life who has no choice but to take in what their mother takes in.
