I've heard the US supported both to weaken them. Is this true?

No.

What we did instead was make sure that they both lost.

(We even publicly announced that this was our policy when the war started!)

Sort of. There was some materiel support ranging from computers to civilian helicopters supplied to both countries through various means during that time, none of which probably really contributed to the final outcome. Iraq's arms came mainly from European and Russian sources, Iran was using arms left over from when they were our ally and some other stuff bought from Europeans.

We were pretty content to sit by and watch at that time.

Why would you want one to win when both can lose and from the failure of both comes two weak governments you can manipulate. Its good for the economy of the world if both governments die in the long-term. A missile is either built out of fear or optimism.

There are enough AK-47's to arm one person out of every 12th in the world, who supplies the world with arms and why do these nations supply them?

We supported Iraq. A small clique within the gov sold weapons illicitly to Iran to fund an allied non-state actor in Latin America.

actually - we supported Iran and provided them weapons until the Shah was deposed and the hostages were taken in 1979. at that point, we changed our allegiance to Iraq and bolstering Saddam's political and military strength (which eventually backfired -- just like Castro, Amin, Ghadaffi, Noriega, etc).
