I started running this January, and worked myself up from running for 2 minutes straight to being able to go for 25 minutes non-stop. I came down with a cold late last week that makes running nearly impossible, because I'm coughing like crazy and I can't breathe through my nose properly. It's been almost 10 days since my last run. Is there anything I can do to keep myself from losing my progress? Should I try going for runs while I'm still sick - just short ones?

Thanks!

The rule generally stands that if it's chest-high or above, take some time off to recover. A chest cold is nothing to scoff at you defintiely don't want to aggrivate the germs and risk a worse infection.

Take the time off, you need it. Your health is a lot more important than your running, trust me!!!

And yes, you can go for short runs or speed walks but stop when you start coughing, if you feel lightheaded, start to wheeze or cannot catch your breath.

Take it easy!!! Good luck!

If you are coughing you may have something more than a cold. Have you seen a doctor or are you self medicating? Are you running a fever? If you have a fever you should not run. I will run if I feel bad but not with a fever. If you can not breath and are coughing you should talk to your doctor, and not run. Taking off a few days is better than going to the hospital or dying.

Go to the doctor. Absolutely don't run. It will seem like you have cleared out, but you only risk sickening yourself even more. The best course is just to take a break for a few days, and maybe lift some weights. Good luck.

If you can, run through it. Get plenty of rest and drink some O.J. but dont get off your cycle if you can help it. I have always found its best to sweat it out.

if ur not too sick train inside and do less lifting etc then u would. if u cant even move than just try to get better as soon as you can and dont push yourself right away or you may get sicker
