Why is it that Leonardo Dicaprio starts getting involved in the environment and now people are so concerned. What's going on in this planet has been going on for years. No one has spoken up, except for scientist who have known this along, but who really listens to them. I think it is so sad that it takes a famous person to make us aware on what's going on with the world. Has to much time gone by now for his to try to stop global warming and saving animals that are on the verge of extinction?

As you have read from other persons: It's sad we listen to a celeb. instead of the ones who really know what is going on. This has been going on for many many years and now that the planet maybe reaching a point of no return folks are now trying to scramble and fix it bit I feel it's way too late. It's also highly possible that a new age will arise from all this, once the earth has reached her new balance, but what it will be no one can know for sure.
Oil and other factors have been the reason no one did anything for many years and now we all will pay a very high price for it-our very lives.
Some humans and animals will survive but who or what is unknown-if you have lots of wealth then you and your might be some of the "Lucky" ones. I use the term lucky because no one knows what the out come of this will be. It will most like be a case of dog eat dog to survive. If you think other countries will open their doors wide, to accept folks from other parts of the globe that are bad off, then think again. Why should they? Especially if they are Americans? Hard fact but true.

As for the reasons that Leonardo DiCaprio may have to worry about the environment you will have to ask him.

I DO listen to what the scientist have to say about the environment because I am an engineer & I know first-hand what is like to see a problem while it is a mile away and wait till the last minute to engage it because of some bureaucratic procedure.

We are worried about the environment because the problem is so big, that when we are finally able to do something it may be too little too late.

I also think it's sad that an actor has to be given the task of informing people about the environment, when this task would be better suited for scientist and political leaders.

I assume you are a high school student. Many students have a vague knowledge of what went on before they were born. The assumption that before Leonardo DiCaprio got involved, noone was aware is pure bunk. Why don't you go to the library and read "The Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson?

I think there more awareness because people travel so much more and more of the obvious symptoms are showing up. If you don't know that there are glaciers in Alaska, you can't be concerned that they are shrinking and the like. As for famous people, how do you see on boxes of Wheaties? Your uncle?

because now things are becoming critical .

and it is politically correct to be on Natures side ,now that she is getting into trouble .

so of course famous people want to be in on it ,
but it is not only now ,
we have been at it for ages
remember the sixties
we were all battling wars, animal rights, hunting whales and seals animals in danger of extinction ,pollution and deforestation back then
how long has Green Peace been around

it is just that now the time of Peace is past .
the Peace did not work and we have to move into another direction and start the green War ,
root out the enemies of Earth and eliminate them.

only the enemies would object to that
so they will give them selves away easily.

the health of the Planet which is detrimental to our own survival as a specie is far more important then the life of an individual

at the moment it is a combination political statement and publicity ploy

animals have always went extinct ( dinosaurs ! ) with and without human help

global warming at it's worse will cause lots of problems but the questions is for who ( some will benefit - animal and human - climate change is just that ( change ) and in the short term is destructive but in the long run not so much - it is the process of change that will be disruptive )

there is 100% agreement that we are in what's called an inter-glacial period - that means that tha ice age cycle is not over and someday we will have another - global warming may actually slow this process - that would be a good thing for civilization in the long run because an ice age would REALLY be a DISASTER of EPIC proportions

People have worried about the environment since the beginning of time. They sacrificed animals (and people) to ask the gods for good weather for their crops. They assumed that droughts, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, etc. were punishments for their evil ways, etc. It's the same today. Instead of tossing a virgin into the volcano, today's environment - as - religion people seem to want to sacrifice the the development of wealth in poor nations and send richer nations back to mud huts to atone for our evil burning of fuels, damming of rivers, etc.

I remember back in the 1970's the cry was that by the end of the 1980's the world would be out of oil, so we'd better find other energy sources. Today's cry is that if we don't stop burning oil we're all going to fry or drown. In 30 years we'll probably see the same end result: it's another false disaster prediction.

really the whole "save the planet thing" started in the late 80's early 90's. i remember doing the save the rainforests/marine life/endangered species/fight the ozone/ thing when i was in kindergarten. i'm still big on caring for the enviroment. i was glad when celebs started talking about it again b/c it raises the interest of the public.

celebs like Leo and Tom are modern royalty in the U.S. so just like thousands of generations before us we follow our royals/

It's a matter of celebrities being associated with a particular idea or concept, and since environmental concern is a valid and reputable goal, they all want to get on the bandwagon.

None of them really care, of course, they just want to be associated with it.
