An allergy is your body's reaction to an irritant.
A "cold" is an infection, usually viral. The symptoms may be similar, but the causes are different. A cold will run its course in a week or so. An allergy will persist as long as the irritant is in your environment.

Colds are caused by virus. Allergies are the result of being in contact with something you are sensitive (allergic) to. Once you are no longer in contact with the allergen, you symptoms should go away in a couple of hours. But colds usually last 2 weeks as the body fights of the invading virus.
Colds are contagious. Allergies are not.

An allergy is the sensitive reaction your body has to certain substances.
A cold is a contagious viral infection.
To me the main difference is that an allergy is a reaction your body develops and a cold is an infection your body catches.
