I just got an itinerary for traveling to Osaka Japan. On the return flight, I was not given a seat #. I looked on the website and it said seating is not available at this time. My travel agent says she kept a seat for me but that the airline is not allowing assigned seating at this time (United Airlines) that at the airport I have to request the seat. Does this mean I'm on standby?

This could mean that the flight is oversold. Since this is probably the case, I would get to the airport early and check in to get a seat assignment. If you get there later they may have already assigned all of the seats even though you have a confirmed reservation. It happens all of the time on oversold flights. First come First served.

No you are not on stand by. The airline holds back a certain number of seats to give out at check in. Check on line 24 hours before your return flight and you should be able to get a seat assignment at that time.

No, you have a seat just not a specific one yet. It is normal for United, but not for American Airlines. I have always had a seat, but my co-workers who fly United on discount sometimes don't have assigned seats. Then again I am Platinum on AA so it may not affect me.

I do not believe it is oversold as much as they want to give people who pay regular fare up to the last minute to get the best seat choices and then leave the rest to the deep discount fares. My co-workers don't get their seats until the day before and they get the last few seats that are really crappy.

Seats are not assigned in advance on many International flights. This is normal. You will get a seat assignment when you check in. It's also normal to not be able to check in online for some or all of the itinerary.

As long as your schedule is confirmed to go, you don't have to worry about anything. You are not on standby. Most of the airlines do not allow seats pre-assignment. The best way to get the seat you want to arrive early at the check-in counter.

It could mean that its overbooked or it could just mean that the seating hasn't been processed yet.

Check in for your return flight as soon as you can.
