Whether the source is a well, or lake, or a river, the water is pumped from that source to a building that has large filters and purifiers (they add chorine to kill bacteria, and other harmful organisms). Then the water is pumped to a large water tank located on a hill above your house somewhere, or if it is flat where you live, to a water tank on a tower.

Gravity causes water to flow from the tank to your house in a pipe buried under the streets (water main) This pipe will be anywhere from 6 inches to 12 inches in diameter. At each house on the street, 1 inch pipes are tapped into the water main, and each 1" pipe runs under your house to all the faucets, toilet(s), and water heater.
