There is no reason not to take the Bible literally. You claim that the Bible is "mostly ficticious" yet no where does it claim to be such (outside when Jesus identified the parables' and time after time what was once thought to be innacurrate in the Bible has been proven to be true.
When you enter into the realm of saying that "not all of the Bible is true" then you set yourself up as the one who decides what parts are true and what aren't which leads to what sections are applicable to you and what aren't. Indeed, you apparently have already arrived at this level.
You are correct about one thing, modern religion has changed although not as much as you make it out. But what you are not realizing is that while religions change as easily as we change our minds God doesn't change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. What He requires and what is acceptable to Him have not waivered. Neither has His plan for redeem us from our sins.
So a person can choose to believe in the answers that tje religion science provides which changes constantly in light of new information (what was true years ago has been shown to be totally wrong) or you can choose to believe in God Who claims that He will never leave you nor forsake you and also claims that "Though the heavens and the earth shall pass away, My word remains."

That's a lot of issues!
There are many lines of separation that you do not recognize. What the 'church' does may or may not be lined up with the Bible. I agree with you on the attention to homosexuals and abortions, the message tends to wander away from the Gospel, the message we are supposed to be getting out.
Church History is not necessarily the acts of God fearing people. Rather II find much of it the work of the devil-- the Inquisitions comes to mind.
Earth history has been interpreted by SOME scientists to have no evidence of a worldwide flood. Not all.
There's more, but I must keep moving. I have on my profile page places where you can get into contact with me for more detailed answers.

First, the Bible is NOT "American" The Bible has been here 2,000 years, and in the making for the previous 2,000 year or so prior to that.
There is PLENTY of evidence that the Bible is accurate. Of course, if you approach it with a pre-bias towards finding fault, you will, but if you come to the Bible with an open heart and open mind, God WILL reveal Himself to you through the pages of that Book, and you will see for yourself that it is true.
Of course, NO proof is EVER enough for someone who just simply does not WANT to believe.
You give a few examples of things you believe couldn't have happened, but it's obvious to me that you've never studied archeology, geology, paleontology, or any of the other "ology's".
There is amazing evidence for a world-wide water catastrophe (ie flood). Entire segments of geologogical strata are fully upside down, in which the oldest strata is on top!
Of course, the real "proof" is (as they say) in the eating; that is, lives are changed, people are healed, addicts are delivered, etc, etc, etc.!
Jesus said it like this, (and if you're not willing to do this, then you really don't want "evidence"), "If you really want to know if my words are from God, or that of a mere man, then OBEY MY COMMANDS, AND YOU SHALL KNOW."
THAT is THE litmus test, the acid test. You do THIS, and you will know for sure. If you aren't willing to take this challenge, then it just tells me that you don't WANT Truth, and you're just basically a rebel.

They "know by faith" meaning that they actually don't know but were brainwashed to think the bible is god's word so many christians will bend over backwards to interpret the things in there the way they need them to be to match their picture about reality. You often have to cherry pick or leave huge parts away, declare some as poetry and others as stories from people who lived back then, rest is the "unchanging word of god". More dangerous it becomes when they try to distort reality to match their beliefs, like young earth creationists or creationists in general, people who swear they were healed by prayer and/or don't rely on medicine etc etc. The problem with your belief is.. you were probably raised in a christian home and you believe based on the christian religion. If you take the bible away, what do you have as reason to believe in that god? Or in any other god? Just wondering.

The Bible is the word of God. I CHOOSE to believe it.
The Church I am a member of never mentions homosexuality, other than for its members to search scripture on it;
Abortions are murder. Face it. It's a fact. We don't have any more right to murder an unborn child anymore than we have the right to murder our neighbor. Religion or no religion.
My Church gives 30% of all its income helping support those in need in our community:
the elderly -- repairing their homes by mending fences, repairing roofs, pulling weeds, mowing yards;
the children, opening up Bible study classes in their elementary schools, after school, financing carnivals, and assorted community projects like sports;
the homeless: we feed hundreds of homeless people in Fort Worth, Texas, and send them blankets and clothing -- new stuff, not cast offs.
New Orleans: we've made over a half dozen trips this past year helping clean up, repair and rebuild, all at our own cost and no cost to the homeowner.
Tzunami: We had a huge yard sale, and raised over $10,000 for the Tzunami, and the church members donated another $10,000. We went to India, and bought fishing boats for the fishermen whose boats were destroyed. Not big business guys, but the individual fisherman feeding his family.
India: We finance missionary trips to India, and give generously to the AIDS commune there.
We do much more.
We are God's hands and feet.
I just said a prayer for you...... for God to open a door for someone to come into your life and show you what TRUE Christianity really is.

well, in response to the person who said something like "if you read it looking for fault, you will..." well, I read it as a child with an open mind and heart... however some of the stories in the bible make God out to be arrogant, self-righteous, and cruel...I don't know that God would want me to view him this way... you have to remember that the bible was written by people...they wrote it from their perspective...just like someone today writing about 9-11 or the Iraq War... things get embellished and turned around...I don't think the Bible is something to ignore, but you can't take it as the only guideline for living...do you burn bulls at an alter or lock your women away during their periods? Shall we kill all mall employees that stay open on a Sunday?
God created us with free-thinking, logical, problem-solving, forward-thinking minds... we were made to question things and move past our barbaric beginnings... God is not the monster the Bible depicts him to be... He wants us to be good people and live good lives... that's what matters in the end...

Jesus confirmed the Old Testament and promised the New Testament. Our OT is the same as in the time of Jesus.
Try it. It really works.
You do not actually have to believe everything in the Bible to be saved. Just believe that Jesus fulfilled the OT prophecy by coming here. God loved us so much that He did that. Jesus gave His life so that sin does not ever have to separate us from Him in eternity. Ask forgiveness and accept Jesus as your Savior, and you will receive everlasting life. You just need to believe John 3:16 : )

why do you believe in what you believe in? Perhaps that is true for why people believe in the bible. That is what they believe in. Should good become evil at any given time? Of course not. evil will always be evil and good will always be good. so since the bible is the basis of what is good for the christians, it will always be the basis of their decisions regardless of what the church would say.

The bible is the word of God. So to only believe certain passages from it is nonsense, either believe it or not.
