I know this sounds like something from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind..." But I recently heard about somebody getting some sort of memory erasure procedure. Is this possible?

You may have heard about Propranolol (Inderal) being used to prophylactically treat PTSD or even in treating older cases of PTSD. Unfortunately there was an episode on Boston Legal recently which misrepresented the procedure which is relatively new. Propranolol does not erase any memories but it does serve to signicicantly decrease the hyperarousal that occurs with trauma memories and the the emotional arousal experienced during flashbacks. (The hyperarousal is caused by the release of epinehrine that accompanies a life-threatening event, also thought to be the reason why trauma memories are preserved in their original form-like an imprint)

There is an excellent 60 Minutes segment on this from October 2006 which you can view on the website.

most psych treatment will either block or alter memories.
very harmful. wellness is attained through greater awareness. less awareness is the way out the bottom.
