Convention says 6 weeks. Chances are, the wedding isn't going to come as a surprise to anyone, so that typically is enough time for them to get responses back to you within 3 weeks of your day. However, lately it seems that the send time has been stretched to 8 weeks with an RSVP still being expected about 3 weeks out.
As an FYI, if you have friends or family overseas, the invitations should go out to them at least 3 months in advance.

Congratulations! I am going with aloneinga. Usually, invitations are sent out 8 weeks before the wedding to give guests enough time to plan their trip and make any requests for time off. I do suggest sending out save-the-date notices that include just your wedding date and location immediately; then send the accommodations and travel information in a separate mailing about four months before the wedding. Also, since your wedding is during a major holiday, I would also try calling up some hotels in the area to see if you can book rooms and lock in a discounted rate. Also, be sure to let guests know they should mention your wedding when booking a room at the hotel.

You need to send invites out 6-8 weeks before the wedding date...sooner if it's during a busy time of year. If you have a caterer, find out when they need their final head count for the reception, and then give yourself a good 2 weeks before that day to tally everything up, and call those guests who don't realize RSVP means they have to send the little card back.
Just make sure you build in plenty of slack time for this, if you have a really big (like over 200 guests) wedding, I'd even reccommend 3 weeks prior to your date.
Good luck!

6-8 weeks depending on where they live. If they live out of state 8 weeks. The should RSVP within 3-5 weeks of getting the invite, so about 3 weeks before the wedding.

"Plan to mail out invitations about six weeks before the wedding, with a RSVP date of two weeks before the wedding. This will allow you time to give the caterer a final headcount"

It will depend on how far away the guests are to the wedding ceremony/reception site.
If its a "destination" one for the guests, the sooner the better so they can adequately prepare for time off and saving up to reserve a room if needed.

Usually six to eight weeks. First you have to find out from your caterer the last date she needs the final number of guests. Then backtrack from that a few days because you may have to phone guests who didn't rsvp.
