A conservative estimate is that there are 7.5 million species of animal on earth. I challenge anyone who thinks Genesis is even remotely plausible to sit down and come up with even one million different but coherent names.

Feel free to e-mail me the list.

It would have taken him a substantial amount of time -- certainly more than 24 hours. This is important as it presents compelling evidence that the creative days mentioned in Genesis chapter 1 are not literal 24 hour days. How so? Well according to Genesis 1:23-31, land animals and the first man and woman were all created during the same creative day. But Genesis 2:19-20 by speaking of Adam naming all the animals and him not finding a help meet, gives reasonable indication that more than 24 hours elapsed from Adam's creation until the creation of Eve. Note, too, that even Adam's choice of words upon finally meeting Eve -- ". . . AT LAST bone of my bones . . ." -- indicates that he was indeed waiting for more than just 24 hours. So Genesis 2 gives evidence that the creative days mentioned in chapter 1 are longer than 24 hours.

The scriptures do not reveal the length of time it took for Adam to give names to all the animals. Please bear in mind that time as we know it did not exist then until after Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden.

You and too many others dwell too much on the curiosities of the Gospel rather than delve into the important parts of it. Place more efforts in the New Testament books.

Of course back then there were not all the different breeds of one species...there may have been only one type of canine etc...there was only one race of humans which all came from.

Adam was alone for some time, because at Gen 2: 18 God said "It is not good for the man to CONTINUE by himself." then after Eve was created. Adam said in verse 23 "AT LAST bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.." So it could have been years that Adam was alone.

God brought the animals to Adam to name. The scripture does not mention that God brought the sea life.

Adam lived over 900 years.

If I were Adam I would make it easy on myself.

All the 1,190,200 invertebrates would be called "creepy things"

All the 58,808 vertebrates would be called

1. Fish 29,300
2. Amphibians 5,743
3. Reptiles 8,240
4. Birds 9,934
5. Mammals 5,416

6. Bacteria - 5-10 million
7. Fungi 1.5 million
8. Plants etc. etc. etc.

Have a nice day!!!!

That does not even take into account the animals that have gone extinct.
Yeah I figure that the sixth day was about forty k years. Give or take a millennium.
That is short if you figure that the first 5 days were about 4.5 billion years long.

About 2 hours...

And remember, the bible says that God brought them to Adam so he didn't waste time fetching.

Many species were not named initially because they did not exist yet because reproduction & natural selection (yes christian's believe in natural selection which is loss of information not new infomation) had not revealed them yet.

There is no reason to think he named every individual species; most likely just the basic kinds.

He probably did NOT say, for example, "That is a German Shepherd" and "That is a Chihuahua." (I know they did not exist then; that is just an example. + he spoke probably what we call Hebrew."

More than likely he just said "Those are dogs."

And so on ...

Further, if he could rattle off one name per minute, it would have taken him 15 years:

7,500,000/60 minutes/24 hours/365 days = 14 years, 4 months.
