Jesus did not want the people to misunderstand his work. The Jews were ripe for a leader to come along and free them from Roman rule. There had been many who had tried to lead revolts but with disasterous results. Jesus' kingdom was to be eternal not just a mere moment in history. He did this as not to stir up the people to look to him to lead a revolt.

The first thing to do to understand scripture is to read it in context. That always helps.
Jesus had work to do, can you imagine today if someone could heal people and had another very important job to do. If everyone knew about it they would never let the guy get his other work done. It would be a mob scene.
In additional details give the scripture reference and see if people can help clarify this more.

Aside from the words Jesus spoke in Nazareth near the beginning of His ministry Jesus was fairly reserved when it came to making direct verbal Messianic claims, and He confirmed that He was the Messiah on only a few very private occasions. In public however, Jesus chose to let His actions speak for Him, and to make His case directly to the Sanhedrin, the ruling council of Israel’s religious leaders. Jesus had his eye on these rich and powerful men, and He wanted them to recognize Him for who He was. That is why Jesus told the healed man to tell no one, but to go directly to the Temple priest to present himself, a cured leper, "as a testimony to them."

So he would be able to come and go more easily. You'll note after people disobeyed and spread the word, he was so crowded by people that he had to go either out into the sea or up into the mountains.

I don't remember where it is, but there is a scripture that says something along the lines of being quiet with your good deeds becuase they will be rewarded by the one that matters. I butchered it badly, but htat was the message

Reverse psychology.
He knew if He said don't, they would go and tell it everywhere.
His job was to spread the Word of God.
To spread His coming everywhere.
He understood humans very well.
He should have He was God.
