My doctor recently put me on medication for acid reflux because my throat has been so soar. But I only had heartburn once in the past month and it was like the second time I ever had it in my life.

Yes, you most certainly can! Acid reflux is anytime your stomach acid leaks into the esophagus (the tube from your mouth to your stomach) because the lower esophageal sphincter doesn't close properly.

However, heartburn results when the stomach acid reaches up into the esophagus and touches the lining of the esophagus.

So, if your stomach acid leaks up but does not touch the lining of the esophagus, you will still have reflux but not the heartburn.
