It's a drop in the bucket, but it's a start. I think that if the raids continue, we'll eventually get a grip on the illegal immigration problem. I think we should bring home our armed forces and invoke the posse comitatus act to have them enforce the immigration laws. The Coast Guard already has that authority and immigration is not only a federal law but it is a constitutional law so that means even organized citizens can help to enforce it. The government's first and foremost job is to protect our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Drugs, money laundering, identity theft are all forms of economic and criminal warfare and the president has declared war on drugs numerous times. So bring on the Posse Comitatus and get this done much quicker.

Workplace raids by INS, alone, will not solve the problem of illegal immigration. Sealing the US border (patrolling it with a lot more personnel) combined with an increase in these type of raids will bring the US a lot closer to a real solution. This being said, even an insufficient number of workplace raids is a step in the right direction towards enforcing the law.

No I don't. I worked in a restaurant that used to employee illegal immigrants for some of the kitchen work. They were raided many times, and kept on hiring these people b/c the labor was a lot cheaper than hiring a citizen who pays taxes.
In addition, this was 20+ years ago (when I was in school) and the illegal immigration problem has only gotten worse in this town and neighboring areas.

The government does not want to "solve the problem." Illegal immigrants using fake SSN's contribute 7 BILLION dollars a year the already defunct social security system (Google immigrants + suspense file if the NY Times article link does not work). Plus corporate interests who want cheap labor have too much pull with congress. The raids are just posturing for the media.

Simply put....NEVER. Unless the US decides to put a giant wall up around the entire country, constantly monitored every 5' with heavily armed guards, then illegal immigration will always be a problem. Our freedom to leave the country and return freely also allows many opportunities for others to get in. I believe that everyone should have a fair chance at happiness, but you cant consider it a fair chance when illegal immigrants have a better chance at being employed (ESPECIALLY IN TEXAS) because they will work cheaper and they are bi-lingual (well, some are). There are so many immigrants from mexico (both legal and illegal) here in texas, that it is more economically sound for companies to hire spanish speaking only employees as opposed to eglish speaking only ones.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hardworking and honest (except for when I broke into your house). According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work because he too is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hardworking and honest, um, except for well, you know. And what a deal it is for me! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me. Sound a little bit off the mark??

If they continue to actually enforce the immigration laws then maybe, just maybe, it will start to sink in that coming here illegally is "ILLEGAL". Showing the illegals and the people who hire them there will be a price to pay for doing something illegal is a good start. Just like we put drug dealers in jail we should put illegals and the people who hire them in jail. You can not pick and chose which laws you want to follow. That is unless your name is George Bush.

I'm sure there will be more that will be detained before the year is over. I don't mind having these people here, it's just there aren't giving back to the economy and sucking benefits from our government.

Well the more raids there are HOPEFULLY employers will think twice about hiring them to begin with...
With that...there will be no jobs and nothing for them to come here for....well except welfare....and that needs to be addressed too.
