It depends on what kind of addiction it is, could you be more specific please. If it is a serious drug addiction then proper counseling is required and a great deal of hope, heart and tolerance is needed on your behalf. Seeking professional advice is always best in this situation and talking things over with friends for yourself. Your friend needs the professionals you need support from friends/family etc. There addiction will cease depending on how much they want to be non addicted. Only they can bring them selves round, but support from groups and councilors is very important because these people spend years figuring out what makes people addicted in the first place. Hope I could help x

Overcoming addiction takes very specialized professional help. The only thing that you can to is to help that person get the help that s/he needs. That may well star with a trip to the family doctor. But waiting until this person hits rock bottom won't always work, wimply because, for some addicts, rock bottom is death.

However, you can and should help yourself as well. We've all heard of AA, but there is a branch of AA called Al Anon, and it's for the people who live around an addict. I don't know offhand if NA has a similar program, but you could call them as well and ask, if this person's problem is drugs. Either way, though, that type of support is what you need. And getting this help for yourself will allow you to better understand your own relationship to this individual, and to help without facilitating them, in any way.

Good luck to the both of you.

If some one you know is addicted to drugs or alcohol, you cannot help them overcome the addiction. That effort must come from within them. What you can do is help yourself.

I've been there and found terrific support through attending meetings of Alanon. It is a group that follows the principles of AA or NA but is for some one who has a friend or family member with an addiction problem.

Best wishes.

Depending up the depth of their addiction. They have to surrender first or hit their rock bottom. Then they need to get into a program with people that have the same addiction. Hearing other adicts tell their story and how they deal with similar issue is what helps an addict get on the road to recovery. Believing in a higher power and working a 12 step program is what I do to stay clean. Helping others is the backbone of my program but until I was able to help myself there was no way I could help anyone else.

There is a great resource of help for addiction sufferers.. it is called Addiction Recovery Program... the 12 step program... you can look it up online... it is also good to get some help from a counselor..therapist... or someone you can trust! I did!
Good luck with your friend... they will thank you someday!
You might also check with AA... there is another one...NA...

Unfortunately, Amy, the addict is the only one who can help him or herself. If they do not want help, your attempts will be futile.
