You will need a job. A good breeder isn't in it for the money.

Oh don't quit your day job. The only people who makes money off of breeding are puppy mills. They do not take their dogs to vets, they don't feed them to well, their dogs never hit the ground they are lock up in cages stack on top of each other.. there is no grooming their main concern is producing puppies as fast as they can. When they are to old to breed they toss them out that is if they don't die first from over breeding. Pluse they have so many different dogs they can't keep up with them.

I became a breeder because I shut down three puppy mills and save one from death at a breeder farm. This Shih Tzu I save had a half of tongue, sores all over her, and my vet said she was about 15 years old and just had a litter of puppies. After I got her spayed and fixed up she only got to live two years. What this Shih Tzu taught me is the love she had, because no matter the abuse she had come to know she was still the most sweetest dog I ever known. I knew right there I wanted to breed the Shih Tzu and do it right to help these lovable dogs. I don't do it for the money, Lord I have more going out then I do coming in. I only breed my dogs once a year and some of that money goes to my APL that is close by in my little Shih Tzu name. Breed for the love of the breed and not for the money. Learn all you can about breeding. There are lots of books out there or work with a breeder for a while learn their knowledge. Know the dog you are going to breed inside and out.

I have never known a good breeder who made any money off of breeding dogs. You'd make more money working for a vet as a vet tech or even as a handler at a Human Society, maybe you should consider a career there! You'd have the best of both worlds!

Hahaha you will most definitely need another job if you are going to be a breeder...

Ok, if you are going to be a good and responsible breeder. If you are planning on being a puppy mill and producing crap and taking advantage of dogs and using them to breed litters over and over and over again, not caring about health, temperament or anything else.. But once you get caught and have to pay your fines, and they take all the dogs away from you, then you will not have made any profit at all..

If you plan to buy good quality dogs, and do everything you are supposed to do, do everything properly, you will most definitely need a good job!

When I got my first show dog, the breeder told me, "If you ever make money breeding dogs, you'll now you're doing something WRONG!" So true. Before breeding any dog, you must first complete it's championship in the conformation show ring. The showring is the proving ground of quality for breeding. If a dog is not of a quality to finish it's championship, then it is not of a quality to be bred. Showing the dog to it's championship will be your FIRST expense.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE DECIDING TO BREED YOUR DOG:

Have they completed their AKC championships in the ring, thereby proving their quality as breeding stock?

Have you studied their pedigrees to determine possible genetic defects going back decades?

Have you evaluated male and female against the written breed standard to determine why their particular offspring would make a viable contribution to the breed?

Have you done the requisite health tests?

Are you willing to have their eyes and hips certified?

Do you understand the risk to the female in breeding her?

Are you willing to pay for a Caesaran, (quite common, about $1,000.00 + postnatal care)

Are you willing to supplement and tube feed puppies for 24 hours a day?

Are you willing to spend 12 weeks hand raising puppies in your home?

Are you willing to go to the expense of 12 weeks of shots and wormings for however many puppies you bring into the world?

Are you willing to interview dozens of potential pet buyers to determine exactly which ones will be the absolute Best homes for your puppies?

Will you have a spay/neuter clause in your pet buyer contract requiring proof of spaying/neutering before each pup is 6 months old?

Will you GUARANTEE that for if ANY reason during the life of the puppies you've bred, their owners can no longer keep them, they must be returned to you?

I would suggest you get toknow your bank loan officer really well. I mean really well.
Being a very good and resposible breeder is a full time job and it is very expensive. Read everthing you can get your hand on about the breed of dog you have chosen. Then sit back and rethink the whole thing.

You do NOT make money breeding. Breeding is expensive and time consuming. You will need to have the best bred dogs you can get, do genetic health testing and temperament testing, show or compete with your dogs in some venue, etc.

Yes in order to breed and breed responsibly you will need another full time job.

Breeders should never breed dogs to make money. If they are making money off a litter, something is fishy.

If you love dogs and want to work with them, how about:
-Dog trainer
-Groomer
-Humane Society worker
-Vet Tech
-Veterinary Assistant
-Pet store worker (not a pet store that sells puppies, though)

There is so much you can do if you want to work with pet and actually help to improve their postion in society.

You don't have to breed dogs to love them!!!!
Why do you want to breed? There is really no reason for it. Become a foster parent for dogs-save them. Don't become a contributor to the overpopulation of animals!

Breeding costs:

Read all of this first.

And don't forget that if you only breed on litter, your one female and her one litter can eventually produce 67000 dogs in 6 years. 3-4 million pets are killed each year due to lack of homes.
