You think I'm strange.
You say I'm odd.
Such a terrible person-
No respect for God,
You say you hate me,
well I hate you too.
Can't really blame me--
what am I supposed to do?
"Love everybody", say the Christians
who have terrorized me my whole life.
You say you love everybody.
Yeah, right!

I'm not sure what you've encountered, but as an atheist I can tell you that you might be mistaking aggression for defensiveness.
I don't mean aggression in the base sense. I’ll use myself to illustrate my meaning.
I attack religion wherever I find it because it currently intrudes upon my life, with Christian and Muslim (in the UK) cultists pushing their own obsolete moral agendas into law that has an undue bearing on me. This is why I never react toward a Christian with a moderate attitude, but react immediately as though I've suffered a personal attack- because I believe I have. I'll drop the sword when fantasy-worshiping cultists have every paper they propose screened for signs of religious taint.

Oh boy -you chose the right word!!!!!!
DEFENSIVE!!!!!
You can only defend when being attacked!!
Christians cannot stand anyone with an open mind or anyone with a different religion or who is a non believer. It is because they attack so childishly that others are forced to DEFEND themselves.
Carry on you are doing a marvellous job of totally discrediting Christianity. No wonder the churches are loosing membership so fast.
It was recently said that fundamentalists are turning Christianity from a religion to an ideology. (You will need to look up what the difference is).
And a senior UK churchman said just this weekend that Christians go through their lives failing to realise that God is about "love and truth", not "wrath and punishment".
Think what you are doing for God's sake!

When you hear something so many times it kind of wears you down & you find that your patience for stupidity is whittled down to nothing.
After hearing so many self-righteous christian-types talking down to those who do not believe what they believe.... it's hard to know the intent of someone's comments when they ask certain questions.
I myself try to read questions objectively but there are just some questions that are written to jab at the "non-christians." questions like those are the ones that make us so defensive.
On the other hand..... some people may deal with criticism of their beliefs on a daily basis so your questions may be misconstrued simply because it sounds like something they hear all the time. Family members who don't agree with their beliefs & attempt to convert their way of thinking, etc...
Not everyone is going to like the questions you post.... even when you try your hardest not to offend anyone.
You can't please everyone all of the time, and there will always be AT LEAST one person who will find something offensive in anything you ask.
I would suggest that you just do not let it get to you. It's not worth it. Also, if you post a question simply with the intent of trying to change someone's point of view.... I would suggest you do not. Unless, of course, your intention is to piss people off...... Is that your intention? Yahoo answers is to get information, not to preach & convert the non-christians.

Some people believe that atheism is a rational and coherent viewpoint, while others would question that standpoint. A few devoted followers of some religions see atheism as a disease to cure, or a sign that they should teach you their religion in order to help you reach their religion's heaven. However, engaging in honest conversations with someone who genuinely wants to discuss their viewpoint (rather than argue) may actually prove beneficial.

Hmm, i can only say that i am trying not to take things personally, as long as i know my conscience is clear, that's good enough :=) to be at peace with myself, God and others. if i fail, its ok, i just pick up and try again, until i succeed. Christ is my model and he gives me the strength by his grace to be like him.
Simply put, what good does it get when others are kind to me when i am friendly to me. god wants us to be kind esp. those who persecute him, eps. in his name and i am willing to do so. as it not only help to build my virtue but of all to look at things differently :=p

They are so rigidly defensive because it is impossible to rationally defend a pack of nonsense. They are reeling from cognitive dissonance.
