I have a Samsung HDTV with DirecTV HD DVR hooked up, a Wii, a DVD player and Xbox 360. I have an AIWA stereo hooked up to the TV output and I can get the surround sound to work with Wii and DVD and antenna only tv, but not DirecTV or Xbox 360. Could you it have anything to do with them being HD components? Help, please

Depends how you try to get the surround sound; via HDMI or via s/pdif (digital output)?

It should should work just fine via s/pdif. Make sure you set each input up to receive Dolby Digital (or set it in Auto).

Also, just because you connect to digital audio it doe not mean you will always get 5.1 channels. Most HDTV stations till transmit stereo.

HD surround sound requires a digital audio connection for full digital surround sound, but should be able to play pro-logic if using an rca line audio (the red and white, right and left connection).
My first question is, what output are you using on the TV. It needs to be a digital output like an optical digital audio or coax (rare on tvs)digital audio to get true digital surround sound. (if you are getting surround sound off your antenna, it is a basic surround like dolby pro logic which can be created from the regular left and right audio). If you have the directv hooked up to the tv with an hdmi cable, it would make sense that the surround wouldn't be passed through. All in all, there is probably a better way to hook it up. Feel free to go to www.easier.tv and click on ask the guru. Write in your complete hookup (ie. DVD hooked up with component and rca) and all audio outputs from the TV.

Surround sound depends on the input given to the system.
