There really is no 'best' one out there, you can spend a lot of money on one, but still get the same type of protection from a free anti-virus, minded that you update it regularly and run weekly scans.

An intelligent computer user.
No AV software, like the best automobile airbags, can protect from a bad driver.
Don't open email from people you don't know. Don't download software from sites that you don't implicitly trust. Don't do stupid things like peer to peer networking (Limewire). There is no free lunch, the Internet is like the wild wild west, lot's of bad guys, few sheriffs.
Think of AV software like the airbags/seat belts in your car. They might protect you if you have an accident, but then they might not?
AV software can only protect from virus' they already know about, so you need to make sure your virus signatures are current (as in check every day). Most of the time the AV sw vendors are 2-3 days behind the bad guys, therefore the software can't protect against the latest virus. There is a whole money making industry behind the development of virus's and worms and spyware. If you think this stuff comes from some bored computer nerd in China, your sadly misinformed.

try kaspersky anti-virus,try it for free for 30 days,not so
heavy app(compared to norton av),small and frequent database update,several option to configure it as u like,i choosed it after using mcafee and norton products for a while...

I used kaspersky antivirus until today, where I downloaded Zone alarm internet security suite (if anyone wants serial, please email me)
It's very good, but it lags my comp a lot..

In my opinion AVG is the best, because they update frequently, scan daily,works well and best of all its free(for home use)
