If you just want to stay in Bangkok that's fine. The Grand Palace and surrounding areas are great. I have done them When getting around Bangkok minimize your use of the taxi. Get a map of Bangkok from the concierge of your hotel if you can. Also, get a hotel card that has the hotel's name and address written in Thai so that it is easier for you to tell the taxi driver where you want to go.

Most shopping malls are near the Skytrain, use this mode or the subway. The skytrain has a 100 baht all day pass card, which like the card is, good all day long. It's more convenient than looking for change to go this many stations, etc. Personal preference. The Subway has a 200 baht card that is good for 150 baht, 50 baht refundable deposit and refillable. I stay at hotels along Ratchadapisek Road so I use the subway alot and use maybe 200 baht for a weeks stay.

Shopping wise: I like MBK Center at the National Stadium station of the Skytrain of the Silom Line. 8 floors of whatever you can think of. The Siam Centers are across the street by skywalk, discovery, paragon, etc. The remodeled Central World Plaza or old world trade center is next to these malls.

The pratunam area is near MBK also, it is north of the Siam Centers. On Petchaburi Road just beyond Pratunam is the Platinum mall

You can also go on the river tours, same site has links. Royal River barge museum and floating market tours. there is a tour to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital, about and hour away.

There are some katoey shows:

Here are some tours

There is a bike tour of the other side of Chao Phraya River

You can also look up on www.thaiwebsites.com for other info

Stay out of dark streets. Bars are supposed to close at midnite but it is not strictly enforced.

Most "tourist" women are either shopping or at the beach. Remember you are in Thailand, a third world country by some standards.

Beach areas: There is Pattaya 90 minutes south by taxi or bus. Hua Hin on the opposite side, less touristy.

If you have questions about culture, read at www.thailandguru.com, he covers the do's and don'ts for most things. It's an intro to Thailand website. His info is very current.

Have a good trip. I will be arriving myself on April 15th and staying till April 22nd.

Go to the "Ancient City" where the Thai Historical Sites all around country have been re-constructed here in the real size. You can see many significant places without travel to far north or south. Just 30 Km from Bangkok and can go by Taxi.

Go to "Sukhothai" , the first Capital City of Siam (Thailand) since 1238. You can ride a bycycle back into the 700 years Historical Park. It's 500 Km north of Bangkok but easy to go by plane, train or bus.

Hi there..
Since U will be at Bangkok over the weekend, then I suggest U to visit the Weekend Market (aka Chatuchak Market) as well.. It's just next to the Mo Chit BTS station, and it opens on weekends from morning like 7am till around 6pm.. There's so many stalls selling almost everything U can think of.. But bear in mind, given the hot weather in Bangkok now, please wear light clothings when U go there.. Another thing to note, be careful of Ur belongings as U can expect a lot of ppl shopping over there..
If U have to travel by taxi, remember to ask if the taxi driver is charging by meter. Sometimes, if there is no traffic jam, it's actually cheaper to travel by taxi (provided U have 4 persons to share out the fare)!
When U arrive in the Bangkok Airport, try to see if they have any Official Map of Bangkok over there at the Arrival Hall. I think that's the best map of Bangkok to me.
Enjoy Urself over there, hopefully I will return there in May.. 555..

Find your way to the river and travel by boat. There are tourist boats and also the local commuter boat. It is very easy to do and cost almost nothing. The commuter boat takes a regular route and stops at some interesting places, like near the palace and also china town. It is not so hot on the river and the air is a lot cleaner than sitting in a taxi.
Also travel on the sky train. It is also very easy to do. You will get some interesting views from the train. And it is hard to get lost, because you can just get back on the train and find your way back from anywhere it goes.
