I presume you're referring to John Wayne Gacy. While I don't deny that "there is good in all of us" (although that could lead to an interesting philosophical debate), I'm not sure Gacy is the best example. He was convicted for the rape and murder of over 30 young boys/men. He buried them underneath his house.
He had already been convicted for child molestation before he started dressing as a clown for children's parties. If I'm not mistaken, he once quipped, "A clown can get away with murder." Gacy showed little remorse after his trial. A man with few redeeming qualities.
That said, what was the root of his actions? Difficult to tell. I'll stand by your side in saying that "people are basically good", but Gacy fell far from the tree.
As an aside, I'd recommend listening to the Sufjan Stevens track "John Wayne Gacy Jr.", if you ever get the chance. A compassionate, intimate glimpse into the life of a serial killer (if a bit disconcerting).

I was around when the fire department brought his last victim to our hospital for x-rays. If there was any good in him, it was buried with him and never showed the light of day. Gacey was an excellent argument for retroactive birth control.

Don't judge a book by it's cover! This is a baited question, and I'm sure you know who John Wayne Gacy was. He was definitely not just a so called criminal.

based on this logic, everyone should dress up as a clown to gain children's trust, so we can lure them into a trap of sexual torture and murder. this would prove to the world that there is good in all of us.....some days i wonder why i even log into this site.

So was Manson, because he was a hippy and listened to The Beatles, and preached about love.

Yes, I am sure all of the men that he butchered thought he was a lovely man, too.
