Did Jesus claim, according to those who knew Him, to be the Son of God? If so, was Jesus lying, were they lying, or was Jesus telling the truth? If Jesus was lying, then He could not have been a prophet. Prophets of God do not lie. If His disciples were lying, what reasons did they have to lie? What did they gain?

I know these are a lot of questions, but I'm just wondering what peoples' take on this is. And please, no "it's all a fairy tale" type of answers! There is plenty of evidence outside of the Bible that suggests that a man named Jesus did live, and He did have disciples.
Mainly, this question is for Muslims to consider, but I wouldn't mind hearing from Christians as well.

I will most likely be adding details as I receive answers, so please be sure to check back in.

From your approach to this question, I am going to assume that you are already a Christian, and trying to make a poin to those who are not. So I will answer in this respect: Yes, Jesus IS the Son of God (not just was) and yes, He did indeed call Himself the Son of God, and called Himself a prophet. There is a bible story where Jesus tries to preach in His own hometown, and gets thrown out. His response to that was: "A prophet is accepted, except in his own country." - In this, He is stating that He indeed is a prophet. He also called Himself God when He states "I and my Father are One in the Same." And He was killed for this "act of blasphemy" - as the Jews called it. His disciples were unsure exactly who He was until his resurrection. Peter was given special insight by God into who Jesus was before the Cross, when he proclaimed to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." - to which Jesus was overwhelmed with joy to hear these words from Peter's mouth. Although it really wasn't until after Jesus went to the cross and then rose again, and then the Holy Spirit came upon all of them that they began to truly "get it". After that happened, there was no stopping them, and we, as Christians are living breathing proof that Christ lives still today, and that He is, and always will be EXACTLY Who He said He was. Hope this helps.

The fact that the Messiah would be a prophet is established by Moses at Deut. 18:18. There are many similarities between Moses and Jesus, but most importantly, where Moses failed Jesus succeeded -- Moses offered his life in return for God's forgiveness of the Jews' sins, but God refused; Jesus offered His life as a propitiation for our sins, and God accepted.

Jesus stated He was the Son of God many times in the Gospels -- He referred to His Father many times (which indirectly tells us He considered Himself to be the Son of God).

Some of the titles he gave himself were Son of Man, Son of the Father, and I AM which was the name God gave himself when he was asked by Moses what his name was. Jesus is the only founder of a religion that said he was God.

Peace and every blessing!

Hi Cricket!I believe The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God acting in three separate ways but all three are in perfect union with one another.Jesus is the son of God but he is also God because when the Father created him he placed his own Spirit into his son.So Jesus has his own individuality but has the spirit of the Father indwelling within him as well.Jesus has the Fathers glory, very nature and are United to the Father by the Holy Spirit.Jesus says he is in the Father and the Father is in him.
I do not believe he was a prophet.Prophets were needed as Gods messengers to communicate to his people because the Holy Spirit was not able to reach them due to the fact that Adam sinned and the bridge that connected him to God was broken.
We needed our sins to be completly forgiven to enter into Heaven and we had to be made clean or else we couldn't go.All of the sacrafices people made before Jesus sacrafice were only temporary pardons and couldn't save anyone. But Jesus who was the ultimate sacrafice because he is The Son of God and God in spirit was the sacrafice who would take all of our sins and be punnished for them.He became sin and was severely punnished for them and then died for us.All of our old selves die with him on the cross as we were in Adam and placed in Jesus. When we are saved we are brand new beings resurrected to new life in the body of Christ. We are taken out of Adam who was dead and placed in Jesus who is alive. We then cease to be a descendant of Adam and become a descendant of Christ who is Alive inside all of us.He fixed the bridge that separated us from the Father, now we have the Holy Spirit to directly communicate to us and we have open communication to the Father through the son.
There have not been any new prophets since Jesus Resurrection,he cancelled out the need for them by giving us the Holy Spirit. He warned about the false Messiahs and Prophets who would lead people astray.Jesus fullfilled every prophecy about himself to prove he is who he said he is.
After the Rapture the Holy Spirit will leave earth and only the 144,000 anointed Jews from the twelve tribes of Israel will remain behind to lead more people to Christ during the Tribulation. But those people will not be saved the way we are.By the Holy Spirit our old selves die on the cross with Jesus in order to be saved,But since the Holy Spirit will not be here the ones who want to be saved will be crucified on their own cross and pay the penalty for their own sins. The Roman Catholics will see that this is done.
So yes,Jesus was definitely the son of God and not a prophet. If he were only a mere prophet all of us would still be doomed to death and despair.

Most of the lies about Jesus came in around the third and forth centuries when Rome took over the christian religion. Rome was well known for assimilating anything that it could not control in any other way.

The Unconditionally loving and inclusive message that Jesus taught did not fit well with Romes divide and conquer strategy. I was necessary to drastically water down Jesus' message to make it more palatable to the roman masters.

This is how the bible cam to be. It was an attempt to reinterpret the teachings of Jesus in a way that Rome could accept.

The apostles' eyes were not completely opened to the fact that this was God in their presence until after His resurrection.

They knew that He was someone different and special during His life & ministry........it started to be revealed to them slowly.

Remember when Jesus asked them, "But who do you say that I Am?" And Peter said, "You are the Christ....the Son of the living God"

Jesus said, "Flesh & blood did not reveal this to you....but God did" (Those aren't the exact words but....you get the point)

The following statement from the Bible supports the Islamic belief that Jesus (pbuh) was a prophet of God.

"Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know."
[The Bible, Acts 2:22]

Jesus didn't say he was the son of God, his followers (mainly Paul) did. Jesus was a moral philosopher; his followers made a religion out of him, much like the Buddhists did with Buddha.

he never claim that he was son of God.He was a prophet of God.Prophets of Allah only ask people to worship Allah, as One God without partners. They would never ask people to worship them or anyone or anything else. Allah tells us in the Quran:

Nor would he (a messenger of Allah) order you to take angels and Prophets for lords (gods). Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submit to Allah,s will
To believe in Allah and follow His Commandments has been the message of all prophets of montheism
(*Allah does not force anyone to submit to Him. He has layed out a clear path and then made it known to them the two ways (Heaven or Hell). The person is always free to make his or her own choice*)

It's possible, however for the most part, Jesus referred to his Father often, of which the possibility that he was referring to his step dad Joe the carpenter is likely?
