You will have to convert XLS to a DBF compatible file.
Excel in Office 2003 allows you to save the File as a Dbase 2,3 or 4 format. However, this is no Guarantee, you may have to have a conversion option in the Dbase Program, OR Take it to a file format that Dbase will accept... I have seen some Programmers use an intermediate XML for use in other Programmes that use an XML format, but there are a lot of factors I don't know about your situation, so the above is just a few thoughts

After you have the file opened in Excel and finish working with it, go to File -> Save As.

There, in File type choose ".dbf", and save. I think this is probably the easiest way

Open the Excel file
click File, Save AS
filetype: CSV (comma delimited)

A file in this format can be imported into almost any other datafile you can name.

You had better decide which program you want to stay with or you will be converting constantly.
