I guess it depends on why you are spending so much money. And how much money a group has. And what needs the community has and if it's even possible to even START to try to meet those needs.
Many times, what a community needs, and what the people WANT are two different things. If a church group tries to meet the NEEDS of a community when that community doesn't WANT what it NEEDS, it's throwing good money after bad.
And sometimes, the needs are so great that no one group can hope to even TRY to meet them.
Also, it's not a crime for a church to build a building that is durable, that will stand up to nature, so that if there is no where else to go, people know they can go to the church, because the church will still be standing. Or to build a church that is there to give God glory. I would assume that most Christian churches would consider their church building to be a house of God. Why not build it to Gods's GLORY?

No. Some of the churches I've seen practically constitute idol worship. It's true that congregations need a place to meet, but there are better things to do than build these monumental structures at great expense. When it is nice out, people could worship outdoors, in the ultimate, grandest of churches, nature. Or people could meet in eachother's houses. As it is, most church communities seem to large, not everyone knows eachother as a brother or sister. If you had smaller groups it might strengthen people's faith, and keep there from being just one all powerful preacher. When the church was founded, it didn't seem like there was a singular minister, but that "church" was a bunch of people discussing the teachings of the bible and Jesus. I think many people who loose the faith do it because they don't ever have to find legs for their convictions until it's too late/difficult to do so. But even if they do need a building set aside for worship, it would be great to make it muti-use. Many of the nicer churches have kitchenettes for potlucks and other things, maybe they should take the foodboxes for the homeless a bit further and run a soup kitchen out of their church?

Friend my church is not a fancy church, we do not even have a steeple on it, & no stain glass windows, Yet we can seat about 500 people, & we are about 98% full on Sunday. The true church is not a building, But since you are trying to make a black mark against a church, By saying in a round about way that they should spend their money on the community, Don't you think the unbelievers, Atheists & so on could take what they spend for an internet connection & get off line & use their monthly fee, & give that to the community. Just a thought.

No, I do not think is right, there is nothing on the bible thats says we need a huge and fancy place to worship. The only thing you need is true faith. However now it seems that religions compete to see who can gets the best church and to brag about it and sometimes it seems that they forget about what really matters and about the true necessities of the community.

"No", at times it is gravely unnecessary and cruel when there are people in the society and in the world in great need of assistance and that money could have done a world of good. However, we give and continue to give money towards this supposed "church building fund" and sit as stone as nothing is improved in our very eyes. For Shame!

How large is your house?
What kind of car do you drive?
What kind of clothes do you wear?
Where do you vacation?
What kind of food do you eat?
You serve your community and yourself as you see fit, and the Church will do the same.

The "Community" is the responsibility of it's members(including commercial concerns) and the government-Good neighbors make good neighbor-hoods.Also GOOD FENCES make good neighbors.Spiritual people tend to have positive impact on their area and should be welcome.
